Rams Blow Out Seahawks 42-7: Seven Stats to Know

Los Angeles took control of the NFC West with a dominant performance over the Seahawks on Sunday. The Rams were impressive in all three phases — scoring three rushing touchdowns, registering seven sacks, and recording three punt returns of at least 25 yards — as they took home their 10th win of the season.

Check below for seven key stats from Sunday’s 42-7 victory in Seattle:

    1. GURLEY CONTINUES DOMINANCE

Running back Todd Gurley rushed 21 times for 152 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught three passes for 28 yards and one touchdown, marking his 11th game this season with over 100 yards from scrimmage.

With his incredible performance, Gurley became the first running back in the league since Darren McFadden (2010) to record three or more rushing touchdowns and at least one receiving touchdown in a single game. The Georgia product is also the first player to post four touchdowns in a game this season. Plus, he is the first player in Rams history to rush for at least two touchdowns at CenturyLink Field.

    2. SUCCESS ON THE ROAD

The Rams came out hot on Sunday at CenturyLink Field, scoring 34 unanswered points in the first half. The 34-point margin marked the largest halftime road lead in franchise history. The team’s 42 points overall also marked the most ever scored on the road in Seattle.

Additionally, the Rams moved to 4-1 against NFC West opponents and 6-1 on the road. 6-1 is the club’s best road record since 2001 when they finished the year undefeated away from home.

    3. MCVAY MAKES HISTORY

Head coach Sean McVay, 31, became the youngest head coach to win 10 regular season games since Milan Creigton, 29, with the Chicago Cardinals in 1937. In his first year as the Rams head coach, McVay has led the Rams to a 10-4 record. The last time the franchise had 10 wins in a single season was in 2003, when the team finished 12-4.

    4. ROOKIE REPORT

Wide receiver Cooper Kupp (804 yards) passed Torry Holt (788 in 1999) for second on the Rams all-time rookie receiving list. Eddie Kennison currently holds the record with 924 receiving yards during his rookie campaign in 1996. Kupp will need to average 60.5 yards in Los Angeles’ last two regular season games in order to set the new franchise record.

    5. RAMS NOTCH 7th OPENING DRIVE TURNOVER

On Sunday, the Rams defense caused its seventh turnover of the year on the opening drive.

On 3rd-and-5 from the Seattle 21, quarterback Russell Wilson completed a pass to wide receiver Tanner McEvoy. But as the wideout attempted to get some extra yards after the catch, safety Lamarcus Joyner hit McEvoy and forced him to fumble. Middle Linebacker Alec Ogletree recovered the football, giving L.A. possession at the Seahawks’ 40-yard line.

With kicker Greg Zuerlein’s 36-yard field goal on the following drive, the Rams had scored 107 points off of turnovers this season. They’d add another touchdown off a takeaway later in the first half.

    6. SACK PACK

The Rams sacked Wilson seven times on Sunday. This is most that Wilson has been sacked in a single game throughout his six-year career. L.A. is the only team to accomplish that feat as it also notched seven sacks in 2013 as well.

Defensive tackle Aaron Donald led the team in this regard, getting to the quarterback three times — marking a new single game career-high. Outside linebacker Robert Quinn added two sacks on Sunday, bringing his career total to 62.5 sacks. He is now tied with defensive end Kevin Carter for third most in franchise history.

    7. ZUERLEIN SETS FRANCHISE RECORD

Zuerlein scored 10 points against the Seahawks with two completed field goals and four extra points. In total, he has scored 81 points on the road this season to break the franchise record set by running back Marshall Faulk (78 points) in 2000. Zuerlein (20) has also tied Jeff Wilkins for the most field goals ever made on the road in a single season.

    3. Los Angeles Rams
Oh, wow. Sunday’s win over the Seahawks is the best game an NFL team has played this season. That was shocking. And even before that performance, the Rams were playing like one of the best teams we’ve seen in years. The Rams were in the top five in offense, defense and special teams in Football Outsiders’ DVOA metric before Week 15, and only four other teams had pulled that off after 14 weeks, dating back to 1989: the 1991 Redskins, 1992 Eagles, 1996 Packers and 2012 Seahawks. That’s some great company. And then the Rams won 42-7 at Seattle. Maybe we shouldn’t have been so surprised by that result.

    Rams Power Rankings: Week 16

After a dominant 42-7 victory over the Seahawks, the Rams are in strong position to win their first NFC West division title since 2003. If L.A. is able to come home with a victory on Christmas Eve with a win over the Titans, the club will clinch its division.

Every week, TheRams.com will be taking an aggregate look at where the team ranks in different outlets across the sports media landscape. Here are the power rankings for the Rams heading into Week 16:

    NFL.com, Elliot Harrison Rank: 5

    Last Week: 5

    Change: –

“You knew it was the Rams’ day when Todd Gurley took it 57 yards to the house on a run designed to merely get out of Dodge on third down. L.A. racked up 352 yards on the Seahawks’ defense. You can point to Seattle’s injuries, sure — but the missing players are on the back end. The Seahawks were pushed around all day by the upstart Rams, who are still in the mix for a first-round bye. Sean McVay’s team has scored 438 points in 14 games. The Rams scored 224 all of last year. That’s insane.”

    ESPN.com Rank: 5

    Last Week: 4

    Change: -1

“Andrew Whitworth, Aaron Donald and Johnny Hekker (3): Whitworth has solidified the Rams’ offensive line this season, which has helped Todd Gurley II’s resurgence. Donald solidified the defensive line years ago and has matched a career high with 11.0 sacks in 2017.”

    The Washington Post Rank: 6

    Last Week: 9

    Change: +3

“Their shockingly lopsided victory in Seattle reestablishes the Rams as a top NFC contender. They went 2-2 in their four recent games against the Vikings, Saints, Eagles and Seahawks, and close the regular season against the faltering Titans and the 49ers. A 12-win season is well within reach.”

    Bleacher Report Rank: 5

    Last Week: 4

    Change: -1

“Los Angeles knocked off the division bully 42-7 and another victory or Seattle loss would clinch an NFC West title. The Rams still have a shot at the No. 2 seed if they’re able to win out and the Minnesota Vikings lose their remaining two games.

Either way, the Rams didn’t ask for respect as a playoff contender. The club went into a hostile environment and took their space among NFC heavyweights.

With all the talk about rookie running backs Kareem Hunt and Alvin Kamara, don’t overlook Todd Gurley, who’s exploded as a dual-threat in the backfield under head coach Sean McVay. The third-year ball-carrier out of Georgia has 1,817 yards from scrimmage and 17 total touchdowns.”

    USA Today Rank: 4

    Last Week: 4

    Change: –

“Was there a more impressive win league-wide this season than issuing Seattle the worst loss of the Pete Carroll regime in the NFL’s toughest venue?

Pro Football Talk, Mike Florio Rank: 8

    Last Week: 8

    Change: –

“If the Rams that showed up in Seattle show up in the playoffs, they’ll be showing up in the Super Bowl.”

    from LMU93 :

    [www.footballoutsiders.com]: FootballOutsiders week 15 rankings

After a dominating victory over their division rivals in Seattle, the Los Angeles Rams have now opened up a wide lead in the Football Outsiders DVOA ratings. The Rams are up to 38.0% DVOA, which ranks them among the top dozen teams we’ve ever tracked through Week 15. (You’ll find that table in this week’s Any Given Sunday column.) The Rams actually dropped one spot in offensive DVOA, so they no longer qualify as ranking in the top five for all three phases of the game, but their defense and special teams ratings both improved and more than make up for that small drop.

The Rams rate even better in weighted DVOA than they do in full-season DVOA, since seven of their last nine games (going back to Week 6) had a single-game rating over 50%. Since Week 6, there have only been 24 other games where a team recorded a single-game DVOA of 50% or more, or less than one per team. The Rams have seven. The only other teams with more than two of these games during the same period? The Philadelphia Eagles have three, and the Baltimore Ravens — who narrowly climbed ahead of Pittsburgh this week to rank as the top AFC team in DVOA — have a surprising five similarly dominant games since Week 6.

As has been covered in numerous other places, the Rams are currently undergoing one of the greatest turnaround seasons in NFL history. Barring some sort of unexpected collapse in the final two weeks, the Rams will set a new record for the biggest year-to-year improvement in total DVOA. That record is currently held by the 2013 Kansas City Chiefs, who added Andy Reid and Alex Smith and went from -40.1% DVOA (dead last) and a 2-14 record to 17.5% DVOA (sixth) and a playoff spot. Not bad for a team that didn’t even get much help from their No. 1 pick, since they got to lead off one of the worst first rounds in NFL draft history.

The good news for the Rams is that a lot of the teams on this list went on to have several strong years of playoff contention: the recent Seahawks and Chiefs, the Peyton Manning Broncos, the Jon Gruden Raiders. The 1999 Rams won the Super Bowl, and the 2004 Steelers won the Super Bowl a year later. That Gruden team needs a little extra explanation, by the way. The 1999 Raiders went from 27th in DVOA to third in DVOA in Gruden’s second year as head coach and managed to improve their record from 8-8 all the way to… 8-8. The 1998 Raiders were 5-1 in games decided by a field goal or less. The 1999 Raiders were 1-4 in games decided by a field goal or less, and didn’t lose a game by more than a touchdown. The Raiders finally put luck and strong play together in 2000 and improved to 12-4.
