    Rams Power Rankings: Week 2

The Rams opened the season Monday night with a 33-13 win in Oakland and are now looking ahead to Sunday’s home opener against the Cardinals. The Week 2 matchup will be the Rams’ first divisional game of the season. In 2017, the Rams defeated the Cardinals in both meetings, en route to the franchise’s first NFC West title since 2003.

Every week, TheRams.com will be taking an aggregate look at where the team ranks in different outlets across the sports media landscape. Here are the power rankings for the Rams heading into Week 2:

“The Rams stay parked in the 2 spot, as their second-half effort in Oakland revealed how tough an out this group will be all season long. Loved all the play-action Sean McVay was calling with a fourth-quarter lead and the Raiders anticipating a steady diet of Todd Gurley runs. Maybe, as Booger McFarland pointed out on the ESPN broadcast, it might seem McVay got a little cute with all the throws late, but that was keeping Paul Guenther’s D guessing. Just wait until L.A.’s defense gets accustomed to playing with one another.”

“The Rams acquired Marcus Peters in the offseason to help overhaul a secondary that held the Raiders’ wide receivers without a catch in the second half of Monday night’s win. Peters had a pick-six, and he leads the NFL with 12 interceptions since 2016.” — ESPN Stats & Info

    Yahoo! Sports, Frank Schwab: 2

“If what we saw Monday night is what we’ll see from the Rams defense all season, we might be looking at a team that has a 13-3 type season. Because we know the offense is going to be very good.”

It took the Rams a while to get moving on offense Monday night in Oakland. That’s understandable, given the lack of preseason preparation that came with Coach Sean McVay’s injury-avoidance approach. But they still managed to get into the win column, and their offense figures to get better now that the rust is being knocked off.

“The Rams first game of 2018 was a tale of two halves.
Over the first 30 minutes, a game Raiders team gave one of this year’s Super Bowl favorites all they could handle.
But after intermission the Rams began to assert their will. Jared Goff, Todd Gurley and the Rams offense dominated tempo and time of possession in the second half. On the rare occasions when the Raiders actually had the ball, the Oakland offense could do nothing.
The Rams had three scoring drives of 10 or more plays in the second half—including the final long drive that put the Rams up 13 and all but salted things away.”

“Took a while for L.A. to find groove after key starters coasted for much of August. But they found gear and already have first place to themselves.” Kirby Lee, USA TODAY Sports

“The defense came up big in the second half against Oakland. Now comes a division game against Arizona on a short week.”

“So much for the “starters need to play in the preseason” argument.”
