“He’s not going to throw a fastball when you’re five yards down the field,” Britt said. “He has a sense of when to put a little bit of touch on it, and when to throw it in there with his fastball. But he can throw it all.”
Catching a fastball is easy as slow one…the same rules apply.
Watch the ball all the way into your hands…and yer fine.
I used to always throw the ball hard – to give them a chance to make a move as a ball carrier…and minimize the reaction time for defenders. If I’m a WR, it makes sense to want to make the transition from reciever to ball carrier ASAP…or yer head will be taken off!
Honestly, my very limited experience throwin to UDFAs was that they wanted the ball….fast. If you keep yer eyes on the ball…the speed does not matter.
I’m NOT talking about throwin an absurdly hard ball while standing 5yds away. It’s more like 15-25yds…is it possible to throw too hard to catch at that distance?? Not in my experience, it’s plenty of time to see/adjust and catch the ball if you keep your eyes on it.
And with all WRs wearing gloves now? Jeesh, it doesn’t hurt. lol
I lived in Newport Beach, CA (still do) and in the mid 90’s I threw for UDFA players for their agents to keep them in shape during the year in between NFL/Arena teams and trying out for new ones. It was very interesting to work out with them/throw route tree to them…they’d go tryout for a team and stay for awhile/learn that team’s system and how they liked routes run…get cut come back and resume throwin. They woul share how certain teams liked their routes run one way and not another…and how the various QBs threw those routes and what the WRs preferred and what they didn’t like about certain QBs. Obviously, I only was throwin to fringe NFL UDFA/FA types, but were talented enough to get constant invites to various clubs.
Anyway, I threw it the way they liked it. I got the ball in their hands as fast as possible…that’s what they all preferred
and HATED the QBs that hung the ball – threw a slow ball…cuz it meant that the defense could get a bead and cream them!!
Anyway, it was all very interesting to hear all the different route interpretations… I wouldn’t think ther could be so many derivations!!! lol
