    I think it’s pretty clear that the Shire is formed around anarchist principles, but I think the LOTR vid is breathlessly naive about a lot of that. For one thing the Shire is also dominated by this social opinion version of a traditional status quo. And the book also has no problem with Aragorn as a rightful king. Lines like (paraphrase quote not real quote) “the ring like the state has only one purpose which is to dominate others” are too slogany for me.

    I personally see the Lord of the Rings as an allegory about NFL management styles.

    There are the collaborative types who work well together, and then there are the places with hyper-involved owners who act as de facto GMs, like Washington and Mordor.

    I think the fact that Tolkien saw all that in advance before the superbowl era is a sign of his prescience as a thinker.
