Demoff
* Asked about differences between camp this year and last year. Demoff being Demoff he first focuses on how the team improved “the fan experience” of attending camp.
* This year’s situation is more stable for players. That energy that last year went to where do I need to live, where do I need to be, is now all going to football.
* This coaching staff is trying to work on team identity.
* Goff: after the season last year Jared went straight to work and came in to do film and so on right after the season ended. So he’s the unquestioned #1 and he acts like it, in terms of putting in the time and work.
* In hindsight, when should Goff have started in 2016? KD: there’s no right answer to that. You should never be looking at a 1st pick as the guy who fixes your problems. He should earn the job. He should start when he’s comfortable and when you listen to him now, the experience of having been a rookie and becoming the leader this off-season has made him much more comfortable. No longer a rookie. Goff spent time talking to Derek Carr who went 0-10 his first year. You just get more confident after year 1. Doesn’t matter when he started in year 1, the more important thing is the difference between year 1 and 2.
* How do you pay AD and still construct the team with other guys you sign? KD: #1, AD is a special player and deserves a special contract. Though sometimes that’s harder to structure when you have 2 years left as opposed to 1 or as opposed to a free agency year. In terms of other guys, it’s harder to evaluate who the other longterm signings should be when you have a new coaching staff. You need Wade and Sean to say, this is the guy we want longterm (2nd contract). So there’s a feeling out period. Maybe a guy who didn’t play a ton last year emerges this year in the new systems and the coaches want HIM. A star last year may not be a fit this year. You don’t have to ask that question with AD—Wade keeps telling KD, hey this is the guy. They have 45-50 M in cap space next year and more beyond that, so there’s plenty of room to take care of others (like Tree and Joyner).
* They try to be flexible in terms of the cap and to put larger contract numbers up front.
* And then, stadium stuff. I don’t have the energy to type that. It starts at 20:40 in if you;re interested.
