Random thought I had over morning coffee…What would the Vegas odds be on Hellen Keller surviving the Hunger Games?

    Zooey,

Was wondering about some things. I think I have a pretty good sense of humor — believe it or not. Friends and family say I do, anyway.

    ;>)

But I have to admit to struggling with more than a few of those twitter memes and photos you guys post. Just like New Yorker cartoons, I’m all too often perplexed and can’t see the humor. At all.

Like the one with the wine bottle. And most of those “guy who leers at other girl while walking with his now angry girlfriend” captions.

Is there a special decoder ring needed for twitter humor?

    Hope all is well.

Well, I dunno what to say. I mean, if you don’t find them funny, you don’t find them funny. I don’t think that means anything.

I will say that the entire Industrial Meme Complex is complicated, and there are layers, and sometimes they contain multiple layers of irony, and rely upon audience familiarity with certain memes, or tendencies within memes, and so on. A lot of them are pretty specialized, is what I’m saying. There are some that I don’t “get,” but that’s what the scrolling feature is for.

A darkly humorous moment from the Marvel series “Hawkeye.” You have to know the Marvel films to get the joke. This is Hawkeye at a urinal in New York.

I love the win bottle one.

It’s a bit of dark humor aimed at the idea of universal celebration and holidays. What is Thanksgiving for a leftist? It is often very like the joke meme zooey posted.

Humor is often just a form of social insight.

    Zooey,

Thanks. Makes me feel a bit better.

Kinda like, if I had joined the field trip on Day One instead of Day Eight, I’d probably get the humor.

Sometimes my former students post memes that I have no idea what they mean. It might be something like an anime meme, and to get it, you would have to be familiar with the original anime story, and the original usage of that particularly meme, and something else that happened somewhere else that the meme has been modified to comment on. And if you miss understanding any one of those references, you’re out of the loop.

So I’m happy to post things people don’t understand. It makes me feel like a member of a privileged group. 😉

    That one I get.

Also: “‘Heroic’ vigilante rescues inanimate objects through murdering fellow Americans.”
