2012-2014 Private Visits by Position and Correlation to Draft Picks
2014 Private Visits and Workouts
5 WR
8 OT (5 pure OT, 3 OT/OG) (2 drafted)
6 QB (1 drafted 6th round)
4 CB (2 drafted) —
4 DE (1 drafted) —
4 DT (1 drafted)
2 DB (2 drafted)
2 LB
1 TE
Observations:
[*] The vast majority of the QB’s they brought in were projected to be drafted in rounds 4 and later. Carr and Manziel were the only early round QB’s to be closely looked at.
[*] All of the DT’s they looked at – Donald, Will Sutton, Ra’Shede Hageman, and Easley – specialized in pass rushing and were projected to be drafted early – i.e. first three rounds.
[*] WR is the rare case where they didn’t draft the position when it was among the most heavily scouted.
[*] The only players drafted outside of the prospect list were a 7th round Center and a 3rd round RB. However, for the 3rd round RB, they already had close knowledge of him.
[*] All four of the CB’s they brought in were projected to go in the 1st round clearly indicating they intended to draft a CB early.
[*] It was clear they intended to go OT early; they had multiple visits with all of the projected top 10 OT’s. They met with Jake Matthews in some fashion 4 times!
[*] They looked closely at several early round DE’s but only ended up drafting Sam in the 7th. Could that be an early indicator that interest in a early round DE this year is real?

9 WR (2)
8 OL (5 OG, 3 OT) (1)
5 RB (1)
5 LB (1)
2 DL
1 DB (1)
0 CB (1)
Observations:
[*]All of the WR’s projected to be drafted in the first four rounds. They drafted one in 1st and one in the 3rd.
[*]The LB’s were projected to go from the late first thru fourth round. They drafted AO late 1st.
[*]The RB’s were projected to be selected from the 2nd thru sixth round. They drafted Stacy in the 5th.
[*]OL was a position with numerous visits but only 1 drafted.
[*]They did not work out or have a visit with the 3rd round picks and later: McDonald, Jones, McGee, or Stacy. However, McDonald they already had personal knowledge of…
[*]They drafted a CB when that position was not on the private visit / work out list. Very rare. However, they interviewed 7 DB’s and 4 CB’s at the Combine and other various places. The 11 secondary interviews matched the WR position total interviews indicating serious interest in addressing the secondary despite no private visits or work outs.

4 CB (2)
4 RB (2)
4 LB (1)
3 OG (1)
2 K (1)
2 OT
1 C
1 DE
1 P (1)
Observations:
[*]The only players that had both a private visit and a workout were WR’s and they drafted 2
[*]6 of the 8 WR’s projected to be drafted in the first two rounds. They drafted 1 WR in the 1st. They brought Givens in and drafted him in the 4th.
[*]The DT’s projected to be drafted early – 1st and 2nd round – and they drafted one in the 1st round
[*]The RB’s projected to be drafted in the first four rounds. They drafted one in the 2nd round.
[*]The CB’s projected to be drafted in the first three rounds. They drafted two, one in the 2nd and one in the 3rd.
[*]They did not work out or have a visit with mostly late round picks: Pead, Tru, Watkins, Aaron Brown, or Daryl Richardson. And Pead was after the mistake of trading down and missing on Wagner.
General Observations of the Three Years:
— 7 out of 9 first and second round picks over their three years have had private visits or workouts. All of the first round picks have.
— They’ve only once drafted a position when they hadn’t had private visits and/or work outs for that position. (That would be McGee who’s a bust)
— Only once – last year with WR – have they heavily scouted a position and didn’t draft someone at that position.
— Exactly half – 14 of 28 – of the players they have drafted in 3 years have had a private visit, workout, or interview.
