Am watching it now. Pretty awesome first car chase scene.

I remember a friend telling me they saw it in the theater and it was very good.

I watched a movie on some strange cable channel last night called “Roger Waters’ The Wall”. It was a combination of concert footage and some deeply personal Roger Waters stuff. I admire him more than before I saw it (and he was pretty high up there to begin with).

Not only did his dad die in WW2 when he was very young, his grandfather died in WW1 when his dad was 2. He went and visited the memorials in between the tour.

Funny, I don’t remember ever hearing this one as a Sunday Gospel:

The Bible, a rich and sprawling book, offers another angle on these matters. At one point in the New Testament, Jesus calls a child over and says, “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me; but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.”

I’m struggling to redefine my moral compass as my mother lays on her death bed.

I was raised Catholic, and grew up in the fear of that vengeful god. Now I’m old and unafraid it is time for re-assessment:

Is the above quote really from the Bible? Doesn’t sound like something “my” Jesus would say.

Why does my 94 year old mother have to go through her life’s savings just to die a slow motion, almost scripted death (get me on the last train to Amsterdam when my time is near…).

    Name that song:

We live for just these twenty years
Do we have to die for the fifty more?

OK, it is Young Americans by David Bowie, who knew a thing or two about dying, and, in my opinion, did it well.

I have to go pick up a sister at the airport, and my daughter is taking the train from Boston. Hopefully they both get here in time.

I don’t know what to believe any more (and haven’t for a while). Definitely not the Catholic god; but is it just life and not life? Is there anything of us that makes it past the divide?

I can’t believe in the Catholic god. I’m hopeful there is a hereafter, but the scientist in me says that when you’re gone, you’re gone.

One constant in life: the cat that woke me up an hour ago wants back in…

    Sad news.

Have there been clear connections between head trauma and ALS? If there haven’t been, I think there should be because of how many athletes end up dying from this condition.

    Sorry to hear that, ZN.

Down here in CT, they have people who will come to your house. My brother in law used that when his dog Max got to that point. He found it less stressful on him and on his friend.

I’m dreading that day for my cat, who is only 12 but had a heat stroke 2 years ago.

    My sincere condolences.

Interesting list you found there, Joe. I wonder when it was compiled.

    Very different from NME’s…

Anyway, on the “Overrated” list I put everything by Styx, almost everything by Paul McCartney (solo or with Wings), and the latest few from Cold Play.

My all time overrated album is Thriller.

Here’s my favorite quote from the article:

“The level of ignorance goes beyond stupidity. Again, the National Rifle Association are a bunch of American families who have a voice to stand up for our God-given, constitutionally guaranteed right to keep and bear arms,” Nugent said.

After 12 long years of Catholic schooling, I consider myself versed in the Bible. I don’t recall where God told his Chosen Ones they needed to keep and bear arms. Maybe it was one of the less reported Beatitudes…

I agree, Joe. Fuck Suh. However, he’s getting closer to choosing a team:

    http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/22912220/new-york-jets-rescind-offer-free-agent-ndamukong-suh-christopher-johnson-says

Jets rescind offer to Ndamukong Suh, say ‘our thinking just changed’

New York Jets CEO Christopher Johnson said Sunday that the team rescinded its offer to free-agent defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.

“It just didn’t seem to be in keeping with our long-term plan,” Johnson told reporters at the NFL owners meetings in Orlando.

The Jets’ interest in Suh, which surfaced on Friday, came as a surprise. That they’ve pulled the offer also is a surprise.

The Jets made a “pretty big offer” to the former All-Pro, Johnson said. Suh told Yahoo! Sports that it was the largest offer he had received since he was released by the Miami Dolphins. He’s also drawing interest from the Los Angeles Rams, Tennessee Titans and New Orleans Saints.

Johnson said the Jets decided to change course after he discussed the matter with general manager Mike Maccagnan. Coach Todd Bowles wasn’t part of that conversation, according to Johnson, who wasn’t involved in the decision to make the initial offer.

“I had a lot of discussion with Mike about this,” Johnson said. “Our thinking just changed. That’s where I have to leave it.”

    He declined to elaborate.

The Jets are looking to replace defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, who was released because of cap and production concerns. Bowles, who has spoken glowingly of Suh in the past, reached out to him with a recruiting pitch, explaining that they could use him in their defense.

The staff felt that Suh, 31, could be a valuable addition, a disruptive player who could draw extra blockers. Johnson himself described Suh as “one of the best football players out there,” but he evidently didn’t want him on his team.

Johnson didn’t want it to be characterized that he interceded, saying it was a joint decision with Maccagnan.

“It became apparent to the two of us that this just didn’t work,” Johnson said.

The Jets still have more than $30 million in cap room. They’ve been emphasizing youth during free agency, and Suh’s age likely was a turn-off. Suh also has a reputation for not being a team player.

“I don’t want to be a flash in the pan,” Johnson said, speaking of his team-building approach. “I don’t want to load up on people who can get you there but can’t keep you there. This is about building something great long-term.”

In other developments, Johnson said he was “absolutely” disappointed that Kirk Cousins didn’t take his team’s free-agent offer, but he expressed optimism about the “Plan B” at quarterback. The Jets traded up in the draft, from six to three, presumably to take a quarterback.

“It’s almost a shame to call it Plan B because it’s shaping up as something pretty magnificent,” he said. “I’m really excited about it. … It doesn’t hurt at all that we have an awful lot of money that we might have been sending out the door to one player now back with us.”

ESPN’s Kevin Seifert contributed to this report.

I understand the point of view expressed in the article. Unfortunately, I think it is a symptom of a sick society. Nobody who lives in country that abides by the rule of law should feel they have to be armed to be safe.
The flip side, I think most of the road rage in my neck of the woods is caused by white concealed carry assholes. I have no proof, but I think they can behave as the dickheads they are because they got their gun on them.

I don’t want baby steps anymore; I want steps. First step is reviving the assault weapons ban. As someone famous once said, “Take the guns, then legislate.”

    RIP, Tom Benson.

Back in the day, when the NFC West was the Rams, 9er’s, Falcons and Saints, I always hated the 9er’s and Falcons, but had a soft spot in my heart for the Saints. They had some great 3-4 D’s back then.

It took TB to get them to a Super Bowl. Glad I got to see it.

Just watching more of the footage. “Enough is Enough”.

These kids are going to vote, and soon.

Unfortunately, there are going to be more shootings. With the number of guns out there, how can there not be? My one hope through this madness is that subsequent horrors will harden the resolve of these kids and they will be the ones to change the course of our country.
