A very Happy Birthday!
Hopefully, all these off-season birthday wishes come true!
Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
MackeyserModeratorThanks. And I’m definitely staying hydrated.
High oxalate foods. hmmm. Have to check that out. Never even heard of that before and I do a bunch of food research.
Then again… after the 2nd stone, short of waving crystals above my belly, I’m down for just about anything…
Other than eating Brussel Sprouts.
Edit: WOW… I looked at the Cleveland Clinic’s page on Kidney Stones and I think I figured out how I got them!
For the first time in years, I had a cold both years. So, I started taking megadoses of Vitamin C (several thousand mg per day) at the same time I stopped my intake of dairy. Plus, my intake of Tea increased as did sodium due to things like canned soups.
Turns out it was a perfect storm.
This hadn’t happened before because I hadn’t had a cold in years.
In a scientific and medical sense, it’s interesting.
Knowing that I can help prevent or at least mitigate future stones is encouraging.
Also knowing that I can’t really do anything about THIS stone other than drink plenty of fluid and wait for it to pass…well, that’s not so fun.

MackeyserModeratorNothing’s going to happen.
They’re going to blame it all on some locker room attendent a la Matt Walsh and they’ll all skate.
So what if they are fined and lose draft picks? If they win the Super Bowl, they and their fans will still believe they earned it and the NFL will fight like hell to defend it because they don’t want anyone to believe that they sell a tainted product.
Except, most folks not Pats fans don’t believe that.

MackeyserModeratorBreaking news: sources tell @FOXSports the NFL has zeroed in on a locker room attendant w Patriots who allegedly took balls from officials locker room to another area on way to field. Sources say they have interviewed him and additionally have video. Still gauging if any wrong doing occurred with him but he is strong person of interest

MackeyserModeratorIt’s all part of the corporate packaging of the game.
They don’t just want guys to play well, but they want SPOKESPEOPLE for the league.
Worse, if the player does anything to damage the league, they can be fined. So, they HAVE to do and say stuff to improve the league.

MackeyserModeratorIf we have Foles, Bradford and Hill… I’d be damned happy.

January 23, 2015 at 3:13 am in reply to: Grayson, Hundley, Petty, Carden etc. … the qbs this year #17214MackeyserModeratorI think I heard somewhere that the Rams are interested in Mannion.
It wouldn’t surprise me AT ALL if the Rams did something like this…
Trade down in the 1st…
If we traded down just from 10 to 14… with Miami. Per the Draft Chart, our 1st would be worth their 1st and 3rd.
That would give us picks at 14, 42, 74 and 78 where the meat of this draft is.
I have a feeling that Mannion will SKYROCKET up the draft boards because he’s got 4 years in a pro system.
So, I could see us going Mannion at 14, OG at 42 and BPA at 74 and 78. Wouldn’t surprise me at all to see us go OG/OT or OL/LB
EDIT: Upon further consideration… I think Mannion will remain a 2-3rd rounder.
Presuming Snead is interested in him, then they’d use that 2nd on him.

January 22, 2015 at 7:51 pm in reply to: Some clarification on Chudzinski & other coordinator search news #17150MackeyserModeratorBy delaying the interviewing process, they can put Chud in the position of having to choose between the Rams and the Colts and maybe the 9ers. Which is FAR different than the 5-6 jobs he was likely up for.
It’s entirely possible that with added responsibilities, the Colts like their chances to keep him if they delay the interviewing process.
They surely didn’t want to let him hit the open market at the height of “buying season”.
Whether it works or not, we’ll soon see.
It should be longer since the Pats should have been banned from the SB for cheating, but /sigh..whatever.

January 22, 2015 at 7:38 pm in reply to: Browns interview Cignetti, Rams can't interview Chud or Van Pelt #17148MackeyserModeratorThis is relatively new.
Teams didn’t used to deny coaches a chance to improve their position. That was the unwritten rule. So much so that many folks think that it’s actually a rule when a guy is under contract.
Well, it’s not. If a guy is under contract, they don’t HAVE to give permission… and these days, if they find success with a staff, they are tending NOT to give permission in some circles.
I think coaches are going to have to identify which teams don’t allow promotion outside as part of their consideration process.
Chud and Van Pelt are losing LOTS of money by not being able to pursue their free market opportunities.
Yeah, yeah, I know about contracts. That said, if they stunk, the coach couldn’t insist on staying because of that same contract.

January 19, 2015 at 9:06 pm in reply to: Alex Van Pelt or Chudzinski for OC? Rams ask permission to speak to both. #16894MackeyserModeratorChudzinski is my preferred choice for a few reasons. I could write up something longer and probably will, but I’ll just keep it short for now because I got dinner and cleaning to do.
1) He runs basically the same offense. That’s CRUCIAL. We have young guys who need the consistency. As we saw on the D, it takes time to transition and we are ready to win NOW. To switch offensive systems can take a year to two years. To properly implement a WCO takes two full seasons according to Bill Walsh. Takes 3 for the Perkins-Earhardt (which is probably why almost no one other than NE tries to put it in and NE can do what it does… it’s complicated and requires longevity and smarts at the QB and HC positions, something very few franchises have). Adapting Chud’s version of the Coryell offense should only take the off-season. It may take a few games to really get in sync, but it shouldn’t even take that long. He may even keep the same language or same calls if it helps speed up the learning curve.
2) He had success in a similar division. Chud had offensive success in the AFC North, aka the Black and Blue division where the defenses are the most comparable to the NFC West in Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Cleveland and Cincinnati. So for him to have offensive success in Cleveland even if it didn’t translate to wins including Hoyer breaking out before his injury and Josh Gordon leading the league in receiving even when everyone knew he was the main target shows that he can design plays that GET guys open and even better, got them open on the move. And we NEED that because Schotty couldn’t. The best he could do was to get them open on sit down routes which is why our RAC was just abysmal.
3) He emphasizes a power running game and a vertical passing game which goes to the strength of this team. If Bradford can come back, he’s about the perfect fit for Bradford because he’s not a system switch, but he plays to Bradford’s strengths far more than Schotty did in that he’s more of a vertically oriented offensive mind. Plus, he’s going to REALLY want to use the TEs which means our return on Jared Cook will skyrocket.
There’s more, but I think Chud would be great. Plus, if we draft someone like Hundley who I really like, Chud’s a guy who could develop Hundley or whichever QB we draft while continuing to refine Bradford (he still needs to work on his touch).

MackeyserModeratorI will rather watch Kitten Bowl 2 than this abomination of a sporting event.
Surely there will be other apocalyptic signs…
Or maybe Bane can simply destroy the stadium… heh…heheheh….hahahahaha….
I’d be happy a flock of buzzards flew over the stadium and pooped on the shiny helmets… after gorging themselves on roadkill from Interstates 10 and 15, the birds…almost too heavy to lift themselves, push themselves into the air. Finally having digested the bulk of the carrion, they see their target… shiny marbles moving in a large, loud bowl which is annoying. They unleash poop after poop…tens of thousands of very large buzzards… corporate folks, well to do families and the two football teams become just… battered in buzzard droppings.
Yeah… I’d watch THAT Super Bowl…

MackeyserModeratorWell, I truly believe that Bryant is going to be a freaking ANIMAL. He was just given a redshirt year. Jones would have done well this year, but Fisher won’t stop playing Wells. I can’t begin to understand why. He’s already the worst. I’d have to see worse than worst for myself to give Wells any props…
The Rams really like what they saw from Rhaney and thus the competition for the OL may be pretty damn intense with Jones being healthy and Rhaney ready to compete and new and likely at least one high draft pick coming in to compete for a spot.
I swear, though, if Scott Wells is the starting center on day one… Fisher’s “preference” for Vets will have become a fetish…

January 19, 2015 at 6:19 pm in reply to: Super Agent Lee Steinberg addresses the LA Rams fans today Jan 18th #16883MackeyserModeratorGrits.
This topic is fun… ’til it ain’t.
For all of your passion, and you’ve got it by the pound, it’s critical to stay on topic. When you go after other posters, you cross the line and risk taking the topic off the table.
Now, no one else really has as much “skin in the game” with respect to this topic as you do, so please…
Keep it fun.
It’s all we ask.
And remember, it’s okay to NOT post some thoughts. The better part of valor is discretion. Goodness knows, I’d probably have been banned from every forum (and town) I’ve been to if I said everything that came to mind with the passion and zeal it came with.
So, keep it positive and fun. If the Rams moving to LA…as a possibility… (I mean the damned Seahawks were out of the playoffs with 2:09 to go and now they’re in the SB… so last minute stuff…happens…) happens, then it happens.
Also, if it happens, let’s be clear. This is all about fun, so if it does happen, let’s not have a bunch of gloating. That would be really low rent. Just like if all of this LA stuff were just Billionaire power play stuff for Kroenke to get hundreds of millions in concessions in St. Louis and they stay… then we would expect folks to act accordingly. If they are glad they’re staying, then fine, but let’s just put it in football terms…
we’ll throw a flag for taunting or unsportsmanlike conduct.
Now…if there’s really something to get upset about…it’s this abomination of a Super Bowl.
If there was ever a reason to watch Kitten Bowl 2…this is it…
Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
MackeyserModeratorWell, the “nice and legal” will be easy.
They’ll soften the requirements on what the Rams had to do to stay. That definition isn’t fully articulated based on empirical data or numbers, so there’s room for fudgery. And fudgery there will be.
They can also just defer. As in Kroenke’s Cross-ownership issues. Now, if the Denver Broncos would just sell to Kroenke, all his problems would go away and Kroenke outright ASKED to buy them.
So, he’s not exactly a loyal Rams owner… The Bowlen family refused. I dunno if they’re keeping it in the family or will try to sell at a later time.
However, if the Broncos come up for sale, you can bet the other owners will put Kroenke at the head of the line to take Denver… because that allows the NFL to control who owns the St. Louis Rams AND take back control of what happens in LA.
Short of that, it’s Fudgery and delay for legality.
That or they can revisit the Cross ownership rules. Frankly, the idea that allegiance to a city is a real thing in 2015 over allegiance to one’s purchased team is asinine.
If I own the Tampa Bay Rays AND I own the St. Louis Rams (one can dream), I’m not in the least compromised when the Tampa Buccaneers play the St. Louis Rams. I own the Rams and I have business interests in both cities.
How often do you see the Yankees and football Giants doing functions together? Never? ’bout right… It’s a total non-issue.
So, another way to go is to simply eliminate the Cross-ownership rules altogether. That would eliminate a HUGE headache for them and open up the pool of owners to some they might LIKE to be owners, but can’t due to the current rules…

January 10, 2015 at 4:42 pm in reply to: new relocation thread! starting with JT: Kroenke faces rough road out of town #16154MackeyserModeratorYeah, Zooey.
I think in the end, the Rams…MAY… be in LA.
And the NFL will STILL build the stadium… and the Jags will move to St. Louis.
Hard on the locals, but the data shows that the fans have supported about the worst team in the NFL over that time better than a number of other cities.
What will be surprising will be if the Raiders actually move to San Antonio.
THAT may happen. Football in Texas is next to Godliness… for some it’s sacrilegiously above actual religion… If you thought Raider Nation was rabid in Oakland… In Texas? woof… Crazy squared… but I wouldn’t mind being at that tailgate for the homemade tamales… sales of Tecate, Dos Equis, and Corona would spike considerably. That is unless the tastes of Raider fans have changed over the years…
One can only hope Port-a-Potty technology has improved…DRAMATICALLY!!!
Worst smell I ever smelled wasn’t the tear gas I had to sample in the Navy… nope… It was from the Port-a-Pottys after the Raider/Bronco game at the LA Coliseum. Damn things were almost overflowing… /wretch and quite literally, LORD HELP those who couldn’t hold it… Just walking by made me gag.

MackeyserModeratorOh, on the voting thing.
I think if Stan decides to break ground without asking the NFL, the vote is a fait d’accompli… he’ll GET the votes because the alternative to getting the votes is worse.
The NFL can a) engage Stan in expensive litigation or b) accept a very large series of relocation checks.
It’s a no brainer. And… since Stan doesn’t listen to any of the drama or bullshitting from the league, all the drama won’t matter to him as he builds his building or moves his team (if that’s what he decides to do) or whatever.
I think the NFL is powerless due to precedent.
Thanks to the lawyers… Tagliabue and Goodell… Corporate lawyers SUCK.
Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
MackeyserModeratorOkay… the San Diego thing is about the only thing that really gets me going.
It’s bullshit. I mean really, REALLY bullshit. Anyone who’s ever LIVED in SoCal knows almost NO ONE will regularly drive down to San Diego from LA. Moreover, the LA Metroplex extends as far north as Ventura County. That’s a FIVE HOUR drive to San Diego…without traffic.
Now, imagine some corporate type from Pacific Palisades buys a corporate box for the Los Angeles Chargers of Anaheim… This drive is just disgusting. It’s all on the Fuck-You-Five…er…Four-Oh-Five Freeway which Heaven forbid one drop of rain falls or someone gets a flat or there’s one fender bender… it turns a 3 hour drive into… who knows? 4 hours? 5? You can’t tell. And I know if you google map it, it says 50 minutes (I call BS)…and you can take the 10 to the 5 (not if you want to see the game) or maybe the 105 (used to be good, but it’s pretty jammed), but on the weekends, the freeways are just a damned MESS. Any other Angelenos can surely validate this. Pacific Palisades to Anaheim is at the very least a 2 hour drive from door to door unless you get REALLY lucky. We used to have passes to Disney and from Disney to our house in Culver City 30 minutes from Pacific Palisades… it would take us over an hour to get home and that would be after 1am when there was very little traffic and we’d be just breezing. So an ideal 2 hours sounds about right based on my actual driving knowledge. Throw in LA traffic? yeah… it’s extra hours. Easy peasy.
The money enclaves in SoCal are just too spread out. Malibu may be 30 minutes from Pacific Palisades… on a good day…, but if it rains (not a problem lately, but can’t be a drought forever)… I went to school in the Santa Monica/Malibu school district. Kids who lived in Malibu would STAY with friends in Santa Monica rather than try to get home because the commute could take HOURS. This is for a drive that at 2am on a Tuesday would take… maybe 20 minutes. All because the entire access is governed by a sometimes 4 lane, later 2 lane highway that if a rockslide comes… you have to drive 45 miles around into the very heart of valley traffic on the 101 freeway…another of the busiest freeways in the country…
So, the very notion that Angelenos from Ventura, San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys, the West Side all the way to Downtown… are going to drive to Anaheim or farther south (because any farther north and you lose the San Diego market and any farther south and you haven’t gone north enough) is just fucknuts crazy. It’s belligerently stupid.
The Rams tried that in Anaheim and it FAILED MISERABLY. Even when the Rams were winning, NO ONE wanted to drive to fucking Anaheim. It’s a shit drive. Why can’t the NFL assholes get that. You do it to go to Disneyland because you’re going to be there all day. You don’t do it for a football game unless you’re going to do the full on tailgate and MOST Angelenos did NOT. And in the new digs, because it’s CA, parking will be at a premium, so most folks won’t want to pay to tailgate. Most situations will require off-site with shuttle parking, anyway. It’s the only way the locals will approve the traffic plans.
Sorry, but when I read stuff about how the Chargers are the best fit… it’s just cringeworthy. I was born and raised in LA and I never met ONE Charger fan until I got older and that was only because the Chargers used to be in LA before they moved to SD.
The Spanos’ have issues in San Diego for a HOST of reasons.
The Rams aren’t in Los Angeles for a HOST of reasons including Gene Autry who owned the Angels and Anaheim Stadium squeezing the Rams BADLY at the Big A (the Rams were the only team in the league who rented a stadium who were not allowed to keep the parking receipts from game day, for example)
I have absolutely no idea what’s going to happen. I really don’t.
But the one thing that makes no sense at all… is the Chargers moving to LA. San Diego is an NFL town. They support the Chargers WELL. They just don’t want to pay for a stadium which I think NFL Owners should pay for themselves. As apparently do San Diego voters. Overwhelmingly. They want the Chargers.. to stay and pay for a stadium. The Spanos family wants what so many other teams got… publicly funded stadiums in sweetheart deals. Not sure how the Levi Stadium deal happened, but it won’t happen in LA or SD. No way, no how…
Anwyay, sorry about the rant. Just frosts my cookies when folks bring up San Diego.
it’s like when National Reporters talk about the Rams and say things we know to be totally wrong and only shows their ignorance.

Don Coryell
Kurt Warner
Orlando Pace
Tim Brown
Junior SeauI dunno about the senior or contributors. Bill Polian and Ron Wolf are known, but I don’t know enough to make a judgment about if their accomplishments are HoF worthy.
I like Greene and Haley, but Tim Brown has waited long enough and it’s beyond time. He needs to be in and unless the voters want to join the Baseball Writers, Tim Brown will be in.

MackeyserModeratorYou rang?
Well I typed up a whole long thing, but the site are it because it hates mobile…
Anyway, coupla things…
1) GRITS, lighten up. No one knows what tomorrow holds. The only reason we have venues like this is to be social and have fun. Occasionally we take ourselves seriously with respect to football analysis or even social commentary. But even then… The only guideline we really need be mindful of is speaking WITH fellow posters as opposed to at or to them. This is supposed to be fun, remember?
2) I think Stan Kroenke realized it’s better to ask forgiveness than permission. Once he breaks ground in Inglewood, which he will be able to do because the Forum still functions as a venue and Hollywood Park recently functioned as a sporting venue. All the traffic, environmental, legal… Just need to be updated. As for the ballot, just ask Inglewood residents if they’d like to see their property values spike? Pretty sure this passes with 70% since we’re talking no public monies. So, since he’ll have broken ground where no one else will have been able because they can’t without the commitment of the NFL or a team… It’s either expensive litigation or accept his expensive relocation fee. That doesn’t sound like a hard sell to me.
3) Owner Khan would be great for St. Louis. He is already heavily committed to the area and has no interest in being outside the area. He impressed the NFL so much that he won the Jags with almost no competition. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Rams left and the city of St Louis built a stadium,’that the Jags would move to St Louis. The good news is that they’d be getting the best owner of the bunch. And hey… We always said if St Louis were in the AFC South, they’d be in the playoffs…
Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
MackeyserModeratorHere’s the knock on Schotty.
His offense is brittle. It needs EVERYTHING and EVERYONE to be on point or it doesn’t work.
Not every offense is like that. It’s like going into a battle with a rifle that needs to be perfectly cleaned and oiled and requiring perfectly loaded ammo and to then be held perfectly in order to even have a chance to be accurate. Otherwise, it hasn’t a chance to hit the broadside of a barn. Well, that’s Schotty’s offense. It CAN work and sometimes DOES work, but in the muck and mire of battle, things get messy… and his offense doesn’t allow for messy. Hell, the sight adjustments alone have accounted for more pick-6s against us than some other team’s TOTAL TDs given up as an offense. It’s ridiculous.
And this draft had FOUR WRs who’ve had awesome years… NONE of them would have done dick in this offense. Why? Because the sight adjustments and overly complicated nature of it stymies WR development. Actually, I can’t think of ONE WR who’s flourished in this offense. Granted, it’s more of a running offense, but EVERY offense needs to be able to DEVELOP players at every position.
And this one FAILS to develop WRs. Badly.
Seriously, name me another team that HAS to wait 3 years on WRs to even start to judge? It’s one thing to say that guys don’t become complete until year 3… but this offense can make or break a WR totally and completely due to its complexity… some of it needless and counterproductive.
Here’s my TL;dr take: when an offense can’t integrate talent because it’s too rigid, then it’s already failed. Joe Gibb’s offense (a Coryell variant) was very run heavy, but based on a passing offense. He adjusted to his team, climate, division and a host of other factors to ensure their success. Schotty and Fisher aren’t doing that. Years are going by while we wait on Tavon Austin to integrate into Schotty’s offense.
Fucking WHY? If Tavon Austin were in Pittsburgh, he’d already be a 2k all around weapon. They’d be using him to do everything, but sell popcorn. If he were in Seattle, we would all be WISHING we’d taken him because Pete Carroll would make sure TA would be the bane of our existence…
Lastly, and maybe this is personal… but this offense just doesn’t ask the QB to hit receivers in stride other than the TE down the seem or the super rare fly down the sideline. Where are the slants? Where are the crossing patterns? Why can’t or won’t Schotty call pass plays that allow for run after the catch?
At its best, the Schotty offense with everyone at their best performing at their best… is a MIDDLING offense. It’s NOT a top 10 offense. Not over the course of a season. Over the stretch of a few games, maybe, but not a whole season. And that’s pegging the needle… with no injuries…and 100% execution… which happens in no universe in the multiverse. And that means that the Schotty offense is just NOT likely going to get us into the top half of NFL offenses.
And to my mind, with all the talent we have… that’s just inexcusable. I don’t care if we have the greatest D to ever play the game. We have too much talent on O to be floundering like we are, to make the mistakes that we make, to have the poor calls made over and over and over again.
Either we start over with the talent (which I think would be a massive mistake) because they just can’t consistently execute OR it’s a matter of coaching and the coaches need to go.
It’s one or the other.
And considering there’s also structural issues with this offense, I’m for moving on to better coaches…
Jmho, ymmv

MackeyserModeratorWell I agree with many of your points, rfl, especially about competing.
My only admonition would be that others are free to feel, think and believe as they see fit without feeling attacked as having illusions or masturbating.
This season has been wildly frustrating and it’s important that we all state our cases, make our points or simply vent without other posters being collateral damage.
That said, again, I agree with so much of what you said. I love our roster, but we shoot ourselves in the feet so damn much it’s a wonder we have any feet left and I think so much of that is on the coaches.
This is a great topic and will be talked about all off-season I’m sure. Let’s keep it fun since it’s gonna be s long off-season.

Firstly, the guy wins. No one works harder.
And I’m STILL convinced if he’d made the switch to TE that he’d be an All-Star in this league.
Lastly, while Tebow didn’t shy away from attention, he didn’t go out of his way to go get it. Manziel seeks it out. I don’t buy for a second that he’s a victim of anything. When you party in Vegas and do scandalous things and hang with famous people… you’re ASKING for attention.
And frankly, Manziel hasn’t done much with his arm to make me think he’s that much a better QB. At least Tebow can take a shot. Guy’s built like a dang tank.
Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
MackeyserModeratorIf Scott Wells comes back as our starter, the season is OVER.
Book it. Write it down. I don’t care how much guys want to believe in him… he’s not going to be any “comeback player of the year” type… he’s not going to get any stronger. So that just means that he’s going to continue to get run over…time and time and time again. And if he doesn’t have two super stout guards next to him, then they can’t make up for him being the weak link. Davin Joseph had a string of relatively decent games, but when he was bad AND Wells was his typical turrible… the Rams were just never gonna win and the opposing D got penetration and it was just awful frustrating as a fan to watch because you just KNEW that it wouldn’t have mattered who the QB was…
