    Player Overview

    Marquise Copeland arrived in Cincinnati back in 2015 weighing all of 230 lbs. The defensive line recruit has a background in wrestling and used that to win during his high school career. Copeland was a 3-star recruit as had his share of programs to pick from including Wisconsin, Indiana, and Kentucky to name a few. He decided to stay closer to home (he is from Bedford, Ohio) and got some playing time as a freshman. It wasn’t until his junior year that Copeland really broke out before then he was spending time get reps here and there as he developed his body. His vision improved, he learned how to use his leverage and hands better and get got really effective at being disruptive by stopping the run and putting pressure on the QB. Copeland was able to build upon that success his senior season and while he may not be a household name he has the skillset to be a key cog in the rotation of several defensive lines in the NFL as soon as next season. Copeland is and has been effective just about anywhere he’s lined up on the defensive line. Unfortunately, he did not get a combine invite and while I doubt he was going to light it up, it would have been nice to see how a player of his talent performed in comparison with his peers. Still, Copeland has a nice skillset and while he may be part of a rotation early on in his career I think he has the talent and potential to eventually develop into a starter.
    Strengths

    Plays with good leverage and hand usage. Can fight off would be blockers and counter to get around or through them.
    Eyes are always looking for the ball he has decent read and react ability. Particularly effective as a run defender as he knows how to disengage and make a stop at or close to the LOS.
    Plays with good effort and keeps working through the rep. Can provide pass rush pressure. Has the motor to pursue from the backside and make tackles upfield.
    Strong and can hold his own at POA, at times commanded a chip or double team because of his ability to penetrate. Has experience playing 0, 3, and 5 technique.

    Weaknesses

    Athleticism looks to be below expectations for his size. He doesn’t move awful but it isn’t great either especially when he needs to be agile and show some flexibility. While he can provide some pressure he moves stiffly and doesn’t have the athleticism of other DL prospects to finish and make certain plays.
    Get’s stuck if a lineman gets a good grip on him needs to develop counters for those situations and improve his strength to defeat double teams.
    His athleticism and agility may benefit from rebuilding his body. Remember he came in as a freshman at 230 its obvious he worked out but its also obvious he was eating whatever pleased him too. If he could cut some of the dead weight and replace it with muscle we might see a substantially improved player from an athletic standpoint.

    ow He Would Fit On The Redskins

    With this draft being loaded with defensive talent upfront there are some nice prospects that will last until day 3 of the draft. Copeland is one of those players, he’s a solid developmental DL in either base scheme and with his proficiency with read and react ability as well as getting off blocks he has a strong set of fundamentals to work with. I think the biggest questions surrounding Copeland will be just how long it will take him to develop a few more counters, get stronger, as well as possibly reshape his body. Some of those could develop in short order while others may take more time. When considering where he fits on a team like the Redskins the good news is that he wont be forced to play right away and he can have the that opportunity to improve himself without getting exploited too much in the beginning of his career. The Redskins still need depth on their defensive line given the injuries they have gone through in recent history. Because of those injuries guys like Payne and Allen have had to play upward of 80% of the snaps in games. They are young but we also want them around for awhile and don’t want their play to drop off in the latter half of games or in latter half of the season. Investing in young guys like Copeland, who play with motor and can help against the run and not high priced free agents who barely do the same would be the smart move to maximize the value of the team’s top performers.

    Report: Patriots meet with Eastern Washington WR Nsimba Webster

    Ahead of the 2019 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots have met with lesser-known wide receiver Nsimba Webster of Eastern Washington, according to Yahoo’s Eric Edholm.

    Webster had impressive production in his senior season at the FCS school, with 84 receptions for 1,379 yards (16.4 yards per reception) and 11 touchdowns in 15 games in 2018. During his junior year, he had 59 receptions for 693 yards and five touchdowns.

    Eastern Washington lost in the FCS championship game against North Dakota State. Webster finished the game with four receptions for 92 yards. In the semifinal, a win over Maine, he had nine receptions for 188 yards and four touchdowns. He was also a solid kick returner early in his college years, with 31 attempts for 680 yards in his sophomore season.

    The Rams wrapped the 2019 NFL Draft with eight selections, but the offseason onboarding continued through the weekend. On Monday, the team announced its list of 14 undrafted free agents who agreed to terms with the defending NFC Championship club and will hit the practice field in mid-May when as the offseason program gets into full swing.

    Here’s a look at each college free agent:

    WR Alex Bachman, Wake Forest

    The Rams will welcome former Wake Forest wide receiver Alex Bachman to Los Angeles when rookies arrive in Southern California. Bachman played in 32 games and reeled in 82 receptions for 1,162 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns in four seasons at Wake Forest. The undrafted rookie averaged 17.4 yards per catch as junior in 2017.

    TE Kendall Blanton, Missouri

    Blanton appeared in 10 games as a redshirt senior at Mizzou in 2018 and will add some size to the Rams’ tight ends room. The former Tiger stands 6-foot-6 and weighs 265 pounds. He caught a career-high 22 balls for 177 yards and two touchdowns in his final season on campus.

    G Chandler Brewer, Middle Tennessee

    A First Team All-Conference USA honoree in his senior season at Middle Tennessee State, Brewer was a force on the offensive line freshman through senior year in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Brewer started in 50 games over four years at MTSU, allowing just two sacks in over 450 pass attempts in 2018.

    TE Romello Brooker, Houston

    Brooker’s production bloomed in his final season at the University of Houston. The young tight end pulled in 33 receptions for 409 yards and seven touchdowns as a true senior. Brooker was named the MVP of the Armed Forces Bowl the last time he stepped on the field, when he caught four receptions for 45 yards and a touchdown in the loss against Army.

    TE Keenan Brown, Texas State

    Brown played just one season as a grad transfer at Texas State in 2018, where he was named a First Team All-American tight end by Pro Football Focus. The former Oklahoma State Cowboy ranked third nationally among all tight ends with 51 receptions for 577 yards and five touchdowns in his final college season.

    RB Matthew Colburn, Wake Forest

    The Rams will get to work with two new running backs this summer, with the addition of third-round pick Darrell Henderson and former Wake Forest rusher Matthew Colburn. Colburn, 5-foot-10 and 200 pounds, picked up 2,550 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns on the ground in 542 attempts in four seasons.

    DT Marquise Copeland, Cincinnati

    Copeland could bring a versatile skill set to the Rams offseason program after four years of getting after quarterbacks at Cincinnati as both a defensive end and tackle. In 47-career games, Copeland totaled 187 tackles — 21 for a loss — along with 8.5 sacks, four passes defensed, and two forced fumbles.

    LB Landis Durham, Texas A&M

    Durham might fit in with the powerful pass rushers in Los Angeles. In his final two seasons as an Aggie, Durham posted 17.5 sacks and 22.5 tackles for loss in 26 games. The Rams new young edge rusher finished a half-sack short of the SEC’s top spot in 2018.

    G Brandon Hitner, Villanova

    Offering experience at both left tackle and guard, Hitner earned a 5.24 mark at the NFL Combine, which grades out to ‘an NFL backup or special teams potential.’ At his Pro Day, Hitner showed off some athleticism, recording a 32.5-inch vertical jump and 115.5-inch broad jump.

    C Vitas Hrynkiewicz, Youngstown State

    Hrynkiewicz anchored the offensive line that paved the way for an average of 179.3 yards rushing and 23.1 points per game for the Youngstown State offense in 2018. The young offensive lineman joins Hitner as an athletic big man headed to L.A. Hrynkiewicz ran the 40-yard dash in 5.38 seconds and also eclipsed the 32-inch mark with his vertical.

    LB Natrez Patrick, Georgia

    Patrick was a four-year contributor in the heart of the SEC as a linebacker at Georgia. He made 160 total tackles, 14 tackles for a loss, and added 2.0 sacks in 40 games with the Bulldogs.

    LB Troy Reeder, Delaware

    Reeder transferred from Penn State to his home state of Delaware after two seasons and made an immediate impact for the Blue Hens. As a redshirt senior, Reeder posted 88 tackles and 2.5 sacks as the ‘Mike’ linebacker in Delaware’s 3-4 defense.

    DT Tyrell Thompson, Tarleton State

    In two seasons at Tarleton State, Thompson stuffed the stat sheet with 103 total tackles, 20 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, three passes defensed, and three forced fumbles in 24 games played.

    WR Nsimba Webster, Eastern Washington

    Webster will join fellow Eastern Washington products wide receiver Cooper Kupp and linebacker Samson Ebukam in horns as the offseason program rolls on. Webster had a huge senior year — more than doubling his yards receiving total from the previous season. The wideout finished his final year at EWU with 84 catches for 1,379 yards and 11 touchdowns, averaging 16.4 yards per catch.

    After agreeing to terms with 14 college free agents on Monday, Los Angeles has added five more players to the list on Tuesday morning.

    With these additional players, L.A. has now added five total undrafted offensive linemen to its roster, plus two draft picks in order to build depth on the unit. The Rams also agreed to terms with another pair of wide receivers.

    Check out the list below of the five newest Rams:

    The Rams also announced that they had signed offensive lineman Jeremiah Kolone, a member of the Rams’ practice squad for a short time in 2018. Kolone played for the San Diego Fleet in the defunct Alliance of American Football league.

    Player Bio

    While Sumpter was an All-County pick at Sandy Creek High School in Georgia, he fell through the recruiting cracks. KSU was starting a football program in 2015, so they took a chance on each other. As a freshman, Sumpter started all 11 games, leading the team in receiving and ranking sixth in the FCS with 20.2 yards per reception (26-525, four TDs). He missed three games due to injury in 2016, starting 7 of 8 games played (31-538-17.4, Big South Conference-high eight TDs). Sumpter started all 14 games in 2017 (33-610-18.5, five TDs) to earn first-team all-conference honors. He missed two games with injury again as a senior, but still was a first-team all-big South receiver after leading his squad with 21 receptions for 316 yards (15.0) and four scores in 10 games (nine starts).

    ANALYSIS

    Overview

    Developmental wideout from option-based attack with very average speed (4.66 40) and quickness but intriguing ball skills and body control. He plays like a big target with the frame and strength to garner a majority of the catch space and his explosive leaping ability to makes that talent more pronounced. However, Sumpter needs early enrollment in route-running 101 as his fundamentals and knowledge are below NFL standards. He’s a late-rounder to priority free agent, but has the traits and potential that warrant cultivating.

    Strengths

    Above-average size
    Explosive tester with 39.5-inch vertical and 10-foot, 5-inch broad jump
    Play strength and foot quickness to improve against press
    Quick to locate and adjust on deep throws
    Bangs and out-muscles cornerbacks for catch positioning
    Very good body control near the boundary
    Hands are good enough
    Able to catch through contact
    Adequate extension to catch away from frame
    Wide, welcoming target on possession throws short

    Weaknesses
    Level of competition offered much smaller challengers
    Below-average speed for his size
    Unimpressive acceleration into his routes
    Relies on size and strength over savvy patterns
    Very simple route asks
    Can’t keep route intentions secret from corners
    Speed variances are random and unfocused
    Slows himself when turning to find the football rather than maintaining speed

    Notice no corners. My guess is that that’s cause they added a bunch to the practice squad last year. So I s’pose they thought they had enough prospects there. They will probably keep 5, and 4 of those are already set with AT, MP, R-C, and Long. That leaves 5 more competing for one remaining CB spot on the 53.

    2019 NFL Draft Profile: San Jose State DT Boogie Roberts

    Boogie is ready to dance on the biggest stage.

    The beginning of the Brent Brennan era hasn’t exactly paid off in the win column yet, but the San Jose State football program saw Jermaine Kelly get selected in last year’s NFL Draft and will probably see Josh Oliver selected within the first couple days later this week. Could the Spartans improve upon that trend?

    If they do, Boogie Roberts would appear to be the best such bet. What does he bring to the table?
    Strengths

    Putting up numbers at nose tackle in a true 3-4 defense is crazy and he’ll play 3-tech in the league. Explosive, very good football IQ. Does very well holding ground on, or splitting, double teams. Keeps linebackers very clean and holds his weight very well.

    Roberts got high marks coming out of the Tropical Bowl in January, as well, with NFL Draft Blitz noting that he leveraged his low center of gravity efficiently to win one-on-one battles. For someone who saw more work than just about anyone in the country as a pass rushing nose tackle last fall, it’s an intriguing profile for savvy teams to integrate.

    Weaknesses

    One thing that he could work on is having more moves when rushing the quarterback which include always moving and keeping contact with the offensive lineman. Also, he could fill out a bit more in the upper body to add some bulk.

    In a draft class that’s particularly rich with interior defensive line talent, another significant question is whether Roberts is undersized for the NFL. As he notes above, learning the nuances of how to maximize that physical profile will be key.
