from NFL execs on what all 32 teams should worry about entering the season

On Thursday night, the optimism of the NFL offseason will transition into the sometimes harsh realities of the regular season. So it’s a good time to check in with execs and personnel evaluators around the league for thoughts on what the 32 teams should worry about entering the season.

    Los Angeles Rams
The worry: The offensive line and Todd Gurley aren’t quite as good, leading to regression on offense.

“Every offense gets exposed to some degree when playing from behind, but it’s exaggerated with that offense, because they are so reliant on play-action and their tackles don’t have quick feet. We saw it in the Super Bowl. Now, you lose Rodger Saffold, a top-10 guard. You wonder if Andrew Whitworth finally hits the wall at 37. Gurley has the knee. I do think (Darrell) Henderson could be one of the steals of the draft who could have an Alvin Kamara-type year, which would obviously be big.”

last season the rams ranked league best in fewest drops per pass attempt, league best in fewest offensive penalties per play, and 8th best in fewest drives that ended in turnovers

    2018: Rams gave up 2nd & 4th for All-Pro CB M.Peters
2018: Rams give 1st and 6th for Cooks and 4th
    2017: 2nd for Sammy Watkins

Peters/Cooks were extremely accomplished already as pros. Watkins was thought highly of despite injury. They didn’t get pummeled in the trades either

Using conservative averages (4k yards & 25 TDs per season) Jared Goff will become @RamsNFL all-time leader in both categories within 4 years. If the team can average better than 8 wins, he’d also have more victories than any QB in franchise history by the end of this contact.

Amount of pro-team/anti-player sentiment when discussing money/contracts continues to shock me when I shouldn’t be shocked. The unwillingness to see how the business of pro sports works from BOTH vantage points (player vs management) particularly with football, is mind numbing.

#Rams DC Wade Phillips on rookie S Taylor Rapp: “He’s not John Johnson yet, but he’s got some similar traits.” (Rapp is expected to play Sunday)

Sean McVay said #Rams RB Todd Gurley is not on any pitch or snap count for Sunday’s season opener against the #Panthers. I still think there is a usage plan for Gurley that will be baked into the game plan.

Tyler kind of epitomizes one of the more popular sayings around the #Rams: “The people who know, know.” There’s a ton of nuance and unselfishness to his value and contribution that maybe people outside the building don’t understand or see. Inside the building, it’s unquestioned

Higbee was NFL’s No. 40 receiving tight end, No. 46 blocking TE in 2019, per
@PFF. He allowed the third most QB pressures in pass pro and had a rough postseason in the run game. Looks like Rams are paying for what they believe 89 will develop into.

Once the Jared Goff deal was agreed upon. The #Rams received long-term cap and dollar clarity. Why did the Higbee extension come today? Because the Rams have their QB locked up and team building got easier. Wouldn’t be shocked if another player got paid soon.

Aaron Donald was double-teamed on 63 percent of his pass rushes last season, according to
@ESPNStatsInfo. Wade Phillips expects that number could grow.

If the Packers can solidify their pass protection in the second half, their offense could take off even if they can’t run the ball. Aaron Rodgers went 13-of-20 for 137 yards (47 on one play to Marquez Valdes-Scantling) for a 7-3 halftime lead. And with their defense holding the Bears to just a field goal, the recipe for an upset is in front of them.

I was optimistic about Trubisky making a third-year leap but Chicago Tribune & Sun Times covered his camp
extensively & strongly indicated he was plateauing or regressing.

Only 1/32 of season under our belt but so far looks like the newspapers (long live newspapers) were right.

It was thoughtful of the Bears to open the NFL’s 100th season with the same offense they ran 100 years ago. Kudos. Well done

    Ask yourselves these questions:
    1. What would Andy Reid do?
    2. What would Sean McVay do?

    Do that.

Hmm 3rd and 40. Draw, inside zone or screen? Go

    Screen for the winner

Y’know, maybe skipping the preseason isn’t for everyone.

“My life is more enjoyable if I no longer have to defend Mitch Trubisky”— @ChrisWesseling, jumping off the bandwagon.

I don’t have a strong opinion on preseason reps for starting QBs. It seems a bunch of successful coaches, Reid, Belichick, Tomlin, Carrell, Rivera all play starters some in the preseason. Lots of the younger offensive coaches do not. Worked for McVay last season

Why do the @RamsNFLwant so much depth, intelligence, and versatility at safety? “All we’re trying to do: just buy @AaronDonald97 a split more second (to sack the QB).”
