    The beauty of the inside zone is the simplicity, a play-side double team by the center and the guard, with play-side flow from the rest of the blockers. Then the read by the runner, who watches the first down lineman to the play side, and simply makes him wrong no matter what he does. If that guy goes outside, the runner cuts back and then gives the first down lineman on the backside the same treatment. If that play-side defender dives inside, the runner runs right a straight track to the outside leg of the guard and takes advantage of the gap that’s there.

    Inside zone is a great play, because without changing assignments for almost anyone on the field, the offense has answers for almost any look they can get from the defense. There are no pulling linemen, which means no designed gaps in the blocking scheme, minimizing the risk for negative plays, while allowing blockers to get up to the second level onto linebackers and open big creases for the runner. Any coach will tell you his goal in the running game is to get the running back into the secondary, where he can force defensive backs to miss tackles and create big plays. Inside zone does that in spades.
