znModeratorWhile the personnel has changed, the Rams are running the same offense and Goff thinks that gives them a leg up.
“It’s so fluid, it changes every week at this point,” Goff said, via the Los Angeles Daily News. “It’ll be good that the whole league will have to stick to a similar program, so there won’t be any disadvantage in that way. I do think we [the Rams] have an advantage offensively with the same system, the same players and everything. Our defense is obviously going to have to get on the grass and learn their new system.”

znModeratorfrom Doug Farrar, The NFL’s best cornerbacks in zone coverage: https://touchdownwire.usatoday.com/2020/06/16/the-nfls-best-cornerbacks-in-zone-coverage/5/
8. Troy Hill, Los Angeles Rams
Change is coming to the Rams’ defense, and it may not be good. Wade Phillips was not extended for whatever reason, to be replaced by the inexperienced Brandon Staley. Yes, Aaron Donald is still there, but beyond that, it’s a little thin. Jalen Ramsey leads the cornerback group, but he’s on the last year of his current deal, and it’s worth remembering that the Rams gave up two first-round picks for him.
If Staley is to have a chance to succeed, someone else in that defensive backfield is going to have to step up. That’s where there’s some good news, as Troy Hill really stepped up when the team played zone coverage in 2019, which they did 57% of the time. Hill allowed just seven receptions on 20 targets for 118 yards, no touchdowns, one interception, and a Positive Play Rate of 35% — the fifth-best rate in the NFL for cornerbacks targeted 20 or more times. Hill was an ideal player in Phillips’ defense with his trail ability and recovery speed; it remains to be seen how he’ll be utilized in the new schematic paradigm.

znModeratorfrom https://theramswire.usatoday.com/2020/06/16/nfl-rams-super-bowl-bet-popular/
They regressed in 2019 and endured a number of key losses this offseason, leading to their Super Bowl odds plummeting compared to last summer.
That hasn’t stopped bettors from putting some money down on the Rams, though. There’s been a large uptick in wagers on Los Angeles lately, making them the most popular Super Bowl bet in the last week.

znModeratorThe San Francisco 49ers have rewarded head coach Kyle Shanahan with a brand new six-year contract that will keep him tied to the organization through the 2025 season, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This new deal replaces the three years that were remaining on Shanahan’s previous contract with the Niners. He is now among the five highest-paid head coaches in the NFL. This new contract is rather unique as Schefter reports that it was constructed simply between owner Jed York and Shanahan. The two reportedly sat down and quickly came to an agreement on the second six-year contract of his tenure.

According to Pro-Football-Reference, the 2016 Rams offense was their 2nd worst in franchise history (behind only 2009). And in fact their 6 worst offenses ever were all 2007 through 2011 plus 2016.

NFL practice squads were to expand from 10 to 12 players in 2020. Now, there’s internal talk about expanding to as many as 16 for greater roster flexibility for positive Covid tests, sources tell me and
@judybattista. NFLPA would have to co-sign but that’s more jobs for players.Ian Rapoport@RapSheet
NFL is considering expanding the practice squads to 16 players to allow flexibility for COVID-19 tests. As one exec said, this would mean fewer FA workouts & less travel. Plus if the preseason is shorter, it lets more young players stickJune 18, 2020 at 7:43 pm #116734
znModeratorWhat’s happening with Jalen Ramsey contract?
Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
No new info for you there yet, but I think an Aaron Donald restructure happens first. News of one will hint at the other.Gary Klein@LATimesklein
Rams coach Sean McVay just wrapped up 1 hour videoconference Q and A with local high school coaches. He fielded more than 20 questions ranging from blocking schemes, progressions, 7 on 7 passing leagues, communication with players and practice prep during a pandemic.Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
McVay spoke for an hour answering questions from HS coaches in SoCal – including a female coach out of Western – and was just cool to listen to. That’s a rare bit of access that I appreciate as a writer also always trying to learn.McVay is great on a Q about developing relationships with players virtually: Its about doing whatever you can to connect in that moment. Everyone is in the same boat and it’s just about focusing on what you can do in that space.

znModeratorGoing to throw my two cents on the convo about this play
Whether or not the wheel route would have been open anyways, the defense was alerted to the play so Newton heard them and smartly audibled.
And he called them out for knowing the play too, which is pretty smooooth. https://t.co/nj8DWBMWuU

znModeratorfrom https://theramswire.usatoday.com/2020/05/23/la-rams-darious-williams-brandon-staley-cornerback/
First-year defensive coordinator Brandon Staley singled out Williams on Thursday as a player he really likes.
“I really like this secondary group. I think that Darious Williams is a guy that played really good football for this group in the last couple games,” Staley said. “I think this guy can cover, I think he’s got a really good skill set for corner. He can run, he can change directions, he can play the ball in the deep part of the field, he’s got a good body. Him and David Long – Troy Hill has played a lot of different positions in the NFL, provides a lot of versatility. Those guys really are exciting to be able to work with and we can use those guys in some unique ways, hopefully.”
