This year’s WRs up for 2nd contracts are signing in the 15-16+ M range. So far that’s Landry, Evans, and Watkins. Average their 3 deals and it’s 15.5 M.

So that probably means Cooks can expect around 16 M. However, Cooks also knows that if he waits until free agency, the 2019 WR 2nd contract market will most likely be higher than that. So knowing that maybe it costs more than 15.5-16 M to get Cooks to sign this year. Maybe it’s more like 17 M.

Now. To be a cautious alarmist (see? oxymorons live).

When they traded for Cooks they must have already known what FA WRs are getting on 2nd contracts. They must have known what it would take to keep him. If they can’t make that happen, you have to start wondering about their ability to get those kinds of things done. So they had to tag Tru, then Joyner, and couldn’t/wouldn’t sign Watkins after a trade, haven’t signed Donald, and so what if you have to add Cooks to that as an issue? (which would be: couldn;’t sign him after a trade). That would all start to add up.

It’s premature IMO to act like that IS an issue. But wondering about it, is lurking there in the background.

I mean if it went that way, they would be the only team I know of that followed a trade and 1 year with another trade and 1 year, using a 1st and a 2nd in the process.

    So….sign him.
