Adjacent to that, I’ve been thinking that the NFL – in pursuit of more money – is risking the popularity of the sport. I am fairly certain that they have more standalone games this season than ever before. And I see a future in which Wednesday and Friday games become more common. And the networks will pay for that. Netflix is broadcasting football now fer crissakes.

But one of the drivers of football’s popularity is its comparative rarity in contrast to other sports which have games every day. Football will still draw more viewers because there are only 17 games per team, but if I can watch football practically every day, I’m just not going to. Maybe that’s not really that different from what exists, though, since there are currently a bunch of games I CAN’T watch because they’re concurrent. I don’t know. But it seems to me that they’re diluting the product, to say nothing of consumer fatigue at having to subscribe to multiple premium outlets in order to watch the games.

I just think that they may be milking the cash cow a little too hard.
