I’m guessing the more insightful players, could see thru
what Martz was doing, which makes that whole tactic
more problematic.

I don’t think he is completely honest there about what he was doing. Here’s the deeper story. Before camp, Martz wanted Justin to be the #2. Justin had worked with him before. Vermeil nixed that and said Warner was the #2. He didn’t ask Martz if Warner should be, he just said he is. DV said Justin could not even compete for the #2. Vermeil already knew who Warner was before 99–he had him there in 98. (Ironically, when Green went down, Justin signed as the #2).
Martz is famously abusive. It even showed up in how he treated cohosts when he was part of broadcast teams. So I think that was part of it.
I think Martz lit into Warner at least partly because he was pissed at being shot down over Justin. I bet he told himself that he was just putting pressure on him. And to an extent that’s probably true, because Trent Green told a story about how Warner asked him why Martz was so rough on him, and Green said he told Kurt ah he did that to me too in Washington.
I may not remember the Green story right. I don’t remember if Green told that story or Warner told that story, where he asked Trent about Martyz.
