Implications for the salary cap.
It was not in favor of this move before it happened, but it could end up being smart if the quarterback they pick becomes even a top to 10 to 15 quarterback.
They are in the playoff hunt this year whether case starts or the rookie if he shows enough to prove that he can play right away. But it is difficult to believe it they are a Super Bowl contender with case at the helm.
They did need an upgrade at the quarterback position.
The probability of finding a top 10 to 15 quarterback diminishes greatly below the first several picks in the draft
Manion may end up becoming anywhere from a bust to a lifelong OK back up to a spot starter. Probably not a top 10 to 15 quarterback. If he turns out to be as good as case then we have a cheap back up for several more years. To me that would be decent value in the third round for a quarterback. Possibly the lightbulb goes off and he becomes our Kirk cousins or we trade him.
A rookie quarterback even at the top of the first round will not make us better this year. But if his trajectory is good then he makes us better by year three and for the next decade.
He is also cheap for the next Five years and Foles will not be with us in two yours and probably not next year. His salary will come off.
The bottom line is we will be able to keep our best players that we drafted the last four years while our old oline grows with experience one year ahead of our new quarterback.
Good solid quarterback play gets this team deep into the playoffs and the window is now open 2 to 5 years from now if he is just a top 10 to 15 level quarterback.
One good wide receiver added to that mix will make us one of the favorites.
