The Rams’ offense will remain a mystery until Sept. 10 when they open against the Oakland Raiders. Coach Sean McVay opted to keep his offensive starters safe on the sideline for a third consecutive preseason game Saturday. Defensive starters played two series against the Houston Texans before McVay saw what he needed to determine they’re ready for the season. The unit forced a three-and-out in its first series and in the second series defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh – who said earlier this week he couldn’t wait to get to a quarterback — toppled Deshaun Watson as Watson launched a deep pass that was intercepted by safety Lamarcus Joyner. The sample size was small, but it’s safe to say this defense can wreak havoc this season, especially if Aaron Donald returns.August 25, 2018 at 7:37 pm #89827

Nice second and third effort by John Kelly to get into the end zone on a 15-yard carry. The sixth-round pick from Tennessee looking like a steal for the Rams this preseason.Sam Shields intercepts a pass and the Rams show him a ton of love down the sideline. Shields sat out nearly two seasons and made the decision to return to football after suffering several concussions.
Very cool scene as guys sprinted down the sideline to celebrate with Shields. Could tell this was a moment Shield has been waiting for and teammates clearly ecstatic for him.

John Kelly spins and pinballs his way into the end zone on 3rd-and-goal at the 15 for a touchdown. That was a really nice run. His second TD of the game, and Rams are now 10/14 on 3rd down.—

John Kelly continues to be shifty as hell. The Rams have to very pleased with how he looks so far.Kelly has been a stud this preseason, and it’s only a matter of time before he’s the clear-cut No. 2.
Can confirm that rookie tackle Joe Noteboom played a handful of snaps against both J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney and is still alive.

For the record, that’s 10 consecutive completions for Sean Mannion, after a dreadful start.Dominique Easley in on a series, playing a defensive end role in Rams’ nickel package.

znModeratorfrom ReFocused, NFL Preseason Week 3: Los Angeles Rams 21, Houston Texans 20
https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/pro-refocused-2018-rams-21-texans-20
The Los Angeles Rams defeated the Houston Texans on Saturday evening, 21-20 continuing the third full week of preseason action in the NFL.
Los Angeles Rams 21, Houston Texans 20
Rookie running back John Kelly shouldered the load against the Texans and offered more than a glimmer of promise on the depth chart behind Todd Gurley. He capped off the best drive of the day for the Rams with a 15-yard run on third & goal, as he weaved through the heart of the Texans defense with decisive cuts, spinning through arm tackles before entering the end zone.
Third-string quarterback Brandon Allen produced his best work on third downs, both with his arm and his legs. He picked up one conversion on a scramble up the middle to push the Rams into the red zone. He also set up a couple of conversions on the Rams’ long third-quarter drive with strong throws to out-breaking routes to keep the Rams’ backup offense on the field.
The Rams showed some strong depth up front, as they went to work on the Texans offensive line with second-year edge defender Ejuan Price being the standout. He picked up two sacks, though one was negated by a penalty after a vicious spin move left Texans tackle Chad Slade grasping at thin air.
It remains to be seen who will start opening week at linebacker, but Ramik Wilson’s play of late warrants some serious consideration. Wilson closed quickly in coverage and did a good job getting off blocks.
KEY TO THE GAME
Houston: Houston’s offensive line looked shaky from the start, only to struggle even more as the game progressed.
Los Angeles: Once the Texans’ starting defense left the field, the Rams’ backup offensive line took control. Mental errors were at a minimum and steady play in various combinations allowed the Rams to keep moving forward against the Texans’ backups.

znModeratorWatt, Suh back on field in Rams’ 21-20 win over Texans
http://www.espn.com/nfl/recap?gameId=401030988
LOS ANGELES — Rookie John Kelly rushed for 64 yards and two touchdowns, and the Los Angeles Rams briefly debuted their new defensive stars in a 21-20 preseason victory over J.J. Watt and the Houston Texans on Saturday.
Although the Rams rested 10 presumptive offensive starters for the third straight preseason game, the Los Angeles defense’s three big offseason acquisitions played at the Coliseum. Ndamukong Suh and cornerbacks Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib got some action early in the first quarter before sitting.
Watt also started and made a tackle in his first on-field action since breaking his leg in the Texans’ fifth game last season. The three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year didn’t get to see the current holder of the award, Aaron Donald, who is deep in his second consecutive contract holdout from the Rams.
Alfred Blue rushed for an early score for Houston, and Braxton Miller caught a TD pass from Brandon Weeden, who went 10 of 17 for 108 yards with an interception after Deshaun Watson’s brief action. Quan Bray caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Joe Webb with 5:54 to play for the Texans, but Ejuan Price sacked Webb on the ensuing 2-point conversion attempt.
Nick Rose then missed a 57-yard field goal at the gun. It was the second missed field goal for Rose as the Texans wait for Ka’imi Fairbairn to get healthy.
Kelly, the Rams’ sixth-round pick from Tennessee, continued his breakout preseason in Gurley’s absence with another impressive game. He finished Los Angeles’ 19-play drive that consumed 12:06 of the third quarter with a spinning 15-yard TD run.
Pharoh Cooper caught a TD pass from Sean Mannion, who bounced back from an 0-for-5 start with a bad interception to Kareem Jackson. Mannion finished the first half with 10 consecutive completions, but he has been inconsistent in the preseason, raising some concern about the Rams’ backup situation behind Jared Goff.
For the third consecutive game, the Rams didn’t play Goff, Todd Gurley, four starting offensive linemen, tight end Tyler Higbee and top receivers Brandin Cooks, Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp. Coach Sean McVay has all but ensured Los Angeles’ key offensive skill players will skip the entire preseason, keeping the wraps on the team that led the NFL in scoring last season.
McVay used his entire starting defense except linebacker Mark Barron, but only for about two series. Suh managed to hit Watson as the quarterback uncorked a long throw that was intercepted by Lamarcus Joyner on the Texans’ second series.
Watson finished 3 of 6 for 15 yards.
SAM’S STEPS
Sam Shields made an interception in the veteran cornerback’s next huge step in his comeback from multiple concussions. Shields missed most of the past two seasons and was dropped by the Green Bay Packers during his laborious return from at least four recorded concussions. He picked off Weeden’s pass late in the first quarter and returned it 13 yards before celebrating on the sideline with teammates who understood the importance of the moment.
ANTHEM UPDATE
There were no apparent protests during the national anthem.
INJURIES
Texans: WR Will Fuller sat out with a minor hamstring injury. … LB Ben Heeney left the field on a cart during the first half. Houston didn’t immediately provide an update on his condition. He has been fighting injuries in training camp.
Rams: DL Ethan Westbrooks had a strong first half before getting shaken up on a play shortly before halftime. He went to the locker room early. … LB Matt Longacre completed his long comeback from injury by starting for Los Angeles. He hurt his back late last season and then struggled with a biceps injury in training camp.
UP NEXT
Texans: Finish the preseason at home against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday.
Rams: Finish the preseason at the New Orleans Saints on Thursday.

Ndamukong Suh, on his 1Q hit on Deshaun Watson that led to a Rams INT: “For sure it feels good. We can’t hit 16 [Jared Goff] or even get near him in practice, let alone all the other guys. So it feels good to hit a quarterback.”The Rams just had a 19-play drive that ended in an impressive 15-yard TD run by John Kelly. And, best of all, it took 12:06 off the clock!

znModeratorI hope in next week’s rules video, the league will use this as an example of a play that should NOT have been called a foul. 100% for the helmet and QB protections, but this cannot be flagged (59 for roughing). pic.twitter.com/ybI4JO0arc
