Four teams are set to gain cap space tomorrow as a result of post-June 1 cuts earlier this offseason:
* Bears: $2.8M (Trey Burton)
* Falcons: $10.75M (Desmond Trufant)
* Jets: $11M (Trumaine Johnson)
* Rams: $5.5M (Todd Gurley)

Because the Rams designated Gurley as a post-June 1 release, they’re able to spread his dead cap charge over the next two years instead of taking all of it on in 2020. The drawback was that they didn’t get any relief when they cut Gurley back in March, but the money will come through on Tuesday.

The Rams will gain $5.5 million this week from Gurley’s release, which will put them at more than $6 million in cap space.

The rookies will only eat up $1.676M of the cap

It’s important to remember that only the top 51 players under contract count against the cap.

According to overthecap.com, the Rams’ rookie draft pool is $5.876 million.

But when the Rams sign their 7 draft picks then the guys in the bottom seven spots in the top 51 drop off. Those 7 guys make $610,000 a year each, totaling $4.2M. The team is currently sitting at $569,000 in cap space, but come Tuesday the number will grow to over $6 million. The team’s rookie class remains largely unsigned, and this will be the first order of business with the incoming cash flow.

Some fans were disappointed when the team released Gurley, but the financial impact was clear. With multiple young players that will soon need extensions, it was simply finding the odd man out. Gurley’s injury history made the decision simple for the team….
