Remember the scene in Lonesome Dove where Augustus pistol whips the surly bartender cause the bartender dont remember who McCray was?
I was reminded of that poignant scene when i read this in a book I’m readin.
The book is from the early 90s. Its an auto-bio by a Black Panther. David Hilliard and Huey Newton, founding leaders of the B.Panthers had become drug addicts and had been bankrupted and essentially defeated by the FBI and the system…:
———-
“David,” Huey says, “these motherfuckers don’t know who we are, man!” He’s laughing. “These guys were only ten years old when we were Panthers. Besides they’re dangerous. They have no values. They’re not like us. They don’t have respect for life or anything. You can’t talk to them.”
But, I still don’t believe him. Then one day I’m leaving the dope house and I see some dealers lifting weights. I go over to them. I say “Wait hold this. Let me lift weights.” They just laugh. “Old nigger the heaviest thing you gonna pick up is a base pipe.”
Their attitude shocks me. Contempt. For us! Me and Huey Newton!
“You motherfuckers aint doin nuthin but buyin dope is all. You niggers aint what you all used to be. You all are history.”
