Likes Davis, thought he needed to add weight out of school
Likes this year’s skill player draft better than last year’s. Doesn’t like Cooper that much. Likes Mike Thomas. Always thought Tavon wasn’t a receiver but more of a running back who can catch passes, just doesn’t have a full route tree. Good gadget player, and is expendable. Likes Reynolds. Makes contested plays, good route skills. Kupp–one of the best WRs in this class. Very quick, good physicality. Bill Walsh says what’s important about WRs is how quick they are in the 1st 15 yards and Kupp does that. This year they got guys who can run routes.
Rams did well adding Whitworth. Rams OL needs to grow together and get a feel for each other. Still a year in progress. Gurley seems to be on the right track. This means balance and that helps Goff.
The interviewers wanted Wentz. Waldman likes Goff. Wentz bothered him because he has poor footwork. Cement in his shoes. Leads to inconsistent accuracy. Problem with Goff he was so far behind cause of the Air Raid system. Long play calls, route adjustments. Lot to understand. Goff was expected to know all that stuff in a short time? He was thinking not playing. When he’s comfortable he makes good reads, has a nice deep ball, good at sliding in the pocket. MW saw good things in film last year in spite of the mayhem. In terms of longterm talent Goff is a better choice than Wentz.
Is a Goff in a better situation than Bradford was? Yes, MW agrees, looks that way. Bradford kept losing guys to injury. Bradford showed what he is with the Vikings last year—good play under bad circumstances. With Goff he has (on paper) a better situation.
MW never liked Foles. He got away with a lot in Phil.
What does MW like in qbs? The conventional view is you need the physical skills, and the mental skills. BUT they need emotional intelligence and instincts. You have that or you don’t, and Goff has that…he needs to refine his technique and expand his mental grasp of the game.
Donald. Does not getting Donald back hurt? MW: he can dominate any offensive line. Leverage, quickness, hands. He helps keep DEs from being double teamed. Your whole defense benefits from him being there. They won’t be horrible but with AD they are much better. Hurts the offense too because if teams get up on the Rams they can be confident they can just go after the Rams qb. Donald actually helps prevent that or gives them that potential.
How well will the Rams do this year? Where will they draft? OL. Need a strong line to get a good cohesive unit that can take advantage of Goff, Gurley, Watkins. Likes Sullivan, if he does okay this year that helps. They also need LB. Maybe secondary. OL is the main thing.
