Wade Phillips kicked out officiating crew from Bills’ facility over Music City Miracle

Wade Phillips hates the Music City Miracle. He hated it even more when NFL referees tried to pass it off as an example of good officiating.

According to the former Bills coach’s book, “Son of Bum,” an NFL officiating crew traveled to the Bills’ facility in the offseason after Buffalo’s 22-16 loss to the Titans in the AFC wild-card round (courtesy of the Music City Miracle). They were there to review rule changes for the 2000 season, using video of certain plays from the previous year to highlight how and why certain calls were made on the field.

Guess which play was used prominently near the start of the presentation.

“All of a sudden, one of the first plays to appear on the screen was the Music City Mistake,” Phillips wrote (via ProFootballTalk). “They didn’t just show the play, but they also said it was an example of ‘why we’ve got good officiating’ in the NFL. I couldn’t believe it. None of us could. …

“That really made me mad. Every coach in that room was fuming. As far as I was concerned, our meeting was over,” Phillips wrote. “‘Turn it off!’ I said. ‘We don’t want to see that. First of all, it’s wrong. And for you to sit there and say it’s right is wrong. You need to get out of here right now.’”

Phillips, of course, took responsibility for his team not being prepared for the call — but still maintains Titans tight end Frank Wycheck threw an illegal forward pass on the play. So, it’s easy to see why he’d be mad at NFL officials who brought up a play still fresh in the minds of the Bills coaching staff.

The yard that the Titans robbed from Buffalo on that play came back to haunt them in Super Bowl when Mike Jones made the tackle….

but Wade Philips should’ve started Doug Flutie over Rob Johnson that day.
