If the Rams are going to have a winning season this year they will have to have a top 5-7 ST unit. Having a top-flight ST unit makes a big difference. We’ve seen it the past 3 years. In fact, the slight dip the unit had overall (mainly from poor FG/XP execution) was a factor in them finishing 7-9 vs. 9-7.
The Rams KO and punt coverage units have been a real strength of this team. They have one of the top 2-3 punters in the league. One of the better KOR guys in the league in Cunningham. Austin is a threat (though wildly inconsistent) as a PR guy.
I think when you get to the 51st, 52nd, 53rd players on the roster it should mainly be who excels on ST the most, regardless of their stated “position.” To me Reynolds is a RB in name only. They could just as easily list his position as ST. Way back in the day many will remember the Rams had a special teams ace named Ivory Sully who was listed as a CB but I’m not sure he ever saw the field on defense. But that guy was one of the top ST guys in the NFL and well worth a roster spot. A good example of someone to watch is Bradley Marquez. I think he could show enough as a WR that he’s actually a ‘genuine’ 5th WR to start the season but he is also a very good special teams player. Good reports about him and we’ll see.
