The Los Angeles Rams lost four key defensive starters this offseason after cutting linebacker James Laurinaitis and end Chris Long and watching cornerback Janoris Jenkins and safety Rodney McLeod depart in free agency. Which means a defense that was close to breaking into the top echelon of the NFL could take a step back in 2016 as it begins working with new parts.
To be sure, there’s still plenty of talent on that defense, but the biggest reason to be encouraged that the Rams can continue on their defensive ascent stands on the sidelines.
On Sunday, ESPN NFL Insider Matt Bowen unveiled his list of the five most creative defensive play callers. Planted firmly at No. 4 on the list is Rams defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.
Per usual, Bowen provided in-depth insight into what makes Williams work, including a breakdown of a third-down blitz against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last year in which the Rams overloaded on the edges and brought the heat with their defensive backs.
Bowen played for Williams in 2004 and 2005 and knows firsthand what the veteran coordinator brings to the table. With changes abound on the defensive depth chart, it’s hard to know how the Rams will perform on that side of the ball in 2016. But with Williams in charge, there’s always going to be optimism that unit will be able to maximize its talent.
