The Houston Texans are the “top contender” to steal Brock Osweiler away from the Broncos, but the Super Bowl 50 champions have a backup plan in place if their young quarterback bolts, Marc Sessler of NFL.com reports.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Wednesday that Denver is expected to come after 49ers passer Colin Kaepernick if forced to start over under center, per a source informed of the team’s thinking.
“If they lose Brock Osweiler to the Texans … expect the Broncos to turn their attention to Kaepernick, to try to work out a trade with the 49ers,” Rapoport said on NFL Network’s Free Agency Frenzy. “There have been several teams sniffing around Kaepernick the last several days, but it is obvious that Osweiler is the big domino to fall here.”

The defending Super Bowl champions need to start over at quarterback. Brock Osweiler is heading to Houston.
In the most stunning news of free agency thus far, NFL Media’s Rand Getlin reported that Brock Osweiler and the Houston Texans have agreed in principle to terms on a new contract, according to a source informed of the negotiations. The new deal is worth $72 million over four years, a source told NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport.
The news will set the quarterback carousel spinning madly again. The Broncos suddenly have Trevor Siemian as the only quarterback on the roster, although he won’t be considered a serious contender to start in Week 1 for Denver. Osweiler, meanwhile, becomes the presumptive “franchise quarterback” for a playoff team in Houston that has struggled to find a starter for coach Bill O’Brien.
Rapoport reported that Colin Kaepernick could be an option for the Denver Broncos if Osweiler moved on. At the time, we thought that information might have been used as leverage in negotiations with Osweiler. But we now know the Texans were deadly serious about completing a deal and the Broncos didn’t pay Osweiler what he wanted.
The Texans are taking a risk by putting so much faith in an unknown quantity, even as it leaves an AFC rival caught flat-footed. Osweiler was streaky in seven starts last season. He handled himself well for a first-time starter but also went through long droughts where he could not move the offense. He showed good arm strength and pocket movement but was slow to make decisions like many young quarterbacks.
This is a player the Broncos benched just a few quarters before the playoffs. But the Broncos clearly valued him highly; NFL Media’s Albert Breer reported that Osweiler was offered a $16 million-per-year contract by Denver, which included $30 million in guarantees. Rapoport noted that Osweiler’s move to Houston was motivated in part by him taking his benching personally.

“This is not a surprise. It was clear to John (Elway) last week that (Osweiler) didn’t want to be here,” a Broncos source told NFL Media’s Jeff Darlington.Texans general manager Rick Smith and coach Bill O’Brien, meanwhile, are betting their football futures on Osweiler. Along with the signing of running back Lamar Miller, the lackluster Texans offense now looks a lot different. Osweiler will find a receiving group in Houston that does not measure up to Denver’s crew, and the Broncos’ defense was the best friend a quarterback could have.
In the end, Brock Osweiler followed the money and bet on himself. The Texans matched that bet, and the result of the gamble will help shape the next few years of football in Houston and Denver.
Houston’s scheduled trip to Denver suddenly looks like a strong candidate to be the NFL Kickoff game in Week 1.

Brock Osweiler made the first shocking move of NFL free agency by spurning the Denver Broncos, his team since 2012, to sign with the Houston Texans.
The Broncos wanted the 25-year-old quarterback on the team, reportedly offering him a three-year, $45 million deal.The Texans trumped that offer with a four-year, $72 million deal, but that doesn’t sound like the only reason why Osweiler decided to move to Houston.
His seven career starts all came in 2015 while he filled in for an injured Peyton Manning. Osweiler played reasonably well in those seven games, but during an iffy Week 17 performance against the San Diego Chargers, in which he threw two interceptions, the Broncos benched him for Manning.
Denver went on to win that game with the help of Manning, and Peyton was the starter throughout the postseason as the team won the Super Bowl.
The move reportedly upset Osweiler. Before Manning was healthy, there were reports that the Broncos were Osweiler’s team going forward. He didn’t play a snap the rest of the season after Week 17.
Mike Klis of 9 News in Denver suggests that this is part of the reason why Osweiler fled Denver:

ESPN’s Jeff Legwold wrote on Tuesday that Osweiler might re-sign with Denver “if the money is right and if he has found a way to reconcile being removed from the lineup in the regular-season finale.”
While there were never direct reports that Osweiler was outright angry at being benched for Peyton, it does seem like it took him by surprise. At the time of the benching, Osweiler admitted that it took him a little while to process that he was removed from the Week 17 game. Head coach Gary Kubiak said he didn’t think it would affect Osweiler.
Since Manning’s retirement, particularly following a Super Bowl victory, the showering of love for Manning was setting up a difficult transition for Osweiler. It would be hard for him to fill Peyton’s shoes after a successful season, even if Peyton didn’t play all that well in his final year. To get out from under that shadow is likely a relief for Osweiler.
With a bigger payday in Houston, a solid defense, and an elite wide receiver already in place, it’s not hard to see why the Texans were a more attractive option for Osweiler.
