I don’t think the injury issue goes beyond the year in which the injury occured. However, some contracts do have clauses that address that. I do not think that is an issue with either Wells or J Long. However, when a player is cut he no longer has use of the training facilities or the Rams trainers. By waiting as long as possible to cut a player allows him better rehab chances.

As far as Bradford is concerned, Bradford can be with the Rams throughout the preseason and be one of the final cuts and the Rams would not be out his 2015 salary and the Rams would save his salary against the cap. Unless he is hurt during training camp or preseason in which Bradford gets his entire 2015 salary unless there is an injury settlement.

The rules on injury are spelled out very clearly in the CBA. If a player is injured he will get his salary until he is ready to play or until the end of the season. Injury settlements come when a player is injured (usually a marginal player in preseason) but his injury is not bad enough to keep him out for the whole season. The player and the team works out an injury settlement in which the player receives his salary amount for the period he is thought to be out. The alternative would be to put him on IR which would cost the team his entire year’s salary. Another alternative would be for the team to not cut him until he is cleared to play. But he woyuld be counting against the 53 man roster in that case.
