Now that we’ve all seen video of Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice knocking out his then-fiancée Janay Palmer, a set of related and legitimate questions comes up. Who all saw this video before today? When did they see it? Did the NFL use it to determine Rice’s two-game suspension?

Video: Ray Rice Knocks Out His Fiancée In An Elevator
Below, via TMZ, is the punch that got Ravens running back Ray Rice a two-game suspension from the…Read more

Here’s SI’s Peter King, back in July:

There is one other thing I did not write or refer to, and that is the other videotape the NFL and some Ravens officials have seen, from the security camera inside the elevator at the time of the physical altercation between Rice and his fiancée.

And here’s ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, also from July.

We saw the TMZ video of what happened outside—when he was dragging her out unconscious—but inside, I’m told from those who have seen the video, it wasn’t pretty. In fact, she attacks him—we don’t know the reason why—and he strikes her, strikes her hard. And her head—according to the sources I’ve spoken to—struck the rail inside the elevator and she was unconscious.

Which is exactly what today’s video shows.

    Here’s ESPN’s Jane McManus, today:

And what evidence did police have? Back in July, Ravens PR told us this in an email:

Only thing we know for sure is that police who arrested Ray and Janay and then let them leave together that night saw the video.

But outwardly, and possibly for reasons having to do with both the legal elements of the case and with public relations, the NFL itself was opaque on whether it had seen the video.

Privately, top reporters were told in no uncertain terms that the video existed, that the NFL had seen it, that it showed Janay Palmer acting violently toward Rice, and that, if released, it would go some way toward mitigating the anger against him. One of the league’s most devoted mouthpieces described the video for us on an off-the-record basis, going off what his sources had told him. The implication was clear:If you saw this video, you’d know why Rice only got two games.

Now that the video’s out, the NFL and the Ravens are reversing course.

    Chris Mortensen ✔ @mortreport Follow
NFL: Ray Rice video was not made available to them, despite requests to law enforcement. Nothing on whether NFL had account of what happened

    Jeff Zrebiec ✔ @jeffzrebiecsun Follow
Aiello: “We requested from law enforcement and all information about the incident, including the video from inside the elevator. …”

    Jeff Zrebiec ✔ @jeffzrebiecsun Follow
Con’td: “That video was not made available to us and no one in our office has seen it until today.”

Jason La Canfora ✔ @JasonLaCanfora Follow
Ravens officials had not seen this Rice video prior to today but he had described actions in detail. Didn’t “sugarcoat” it source said…

Jason La Canfora ✔ @JasonLaCanfora Follow
So while the actual footage today was new to the Ravens visually, the description Rice gave them was in line with what the video displayed

There are three possible explanations here. The first is that every single reporter who said the NFL had seen the video was lying. This seems unlikely, since they were all telling the same lie, both for public consumption and in their off-the-record talks with us.

The second is that the NFL was lying to all of the top football reporters back then about having seen the video, in some attempt to smear Janay Palmer.

The third is that the NFL is lying now about not having seen the video—that league officials saw what everyone has now seen, for whatever reason actually found it exculpatory, and are now making false claims to protect the league’s image. This interpretation is supported by an employee of the Revel, the Atlantic City casino where the fight took place. He tells TMZ that the NFL saw the footage before disciplining Rice.

Whatever the case, it’s almost certain that the NFL lied at some stage here, and that the league played a handful of its most loyal reporters in the process, suborning them into a smear campaign against a victim of domestic violence. Those reporters, who regularly and uncritically pass along the league’s party line but are rarely exposed like this, are the ones who look foolish now. Maybe it’s time for them to cut these particular puppet strings and name the sources who burned them so badly, which would do something to show that they’re reporters, and not stooges. If you’d like to outsource the job to us, feel free to email us.

Word is that Harvey Levin is going to come out that the NFL and specifically Goodell knew about that tape. Someone else posted that here that Harvey Levin talked with some Fox5 guy.

Which is partly why I think Goodell HAD TO suspend Rice for the year once the video went public. Which is despicable. It tells us that the initial intent was to WITH KNOWLEDGE of the full extent of Ray Rice’s actions, try to sweep this under the rug if Ray Rice “kissed the ring”, cleaned up his act and played nice. They’d give him a one time pass. The league would lie and say that they hadn’t seen the tape and would do the damage control dance it knows so well.

Except… people revolted and so uniformly from so many cross-sections of society that Goodell just couldn’t run from it.

And now, with the tape coming out, he’s got to cut Ray Rice loose.

    Just one problem.

It’s going to come out that Goodell knew all along.

The NEXT question is does this eventually get Goodell, too?

And Ray McDonald has to know that he’s in for something similar. Someone who cared about these things would be seriously worried about losing a year, but these guys who hit women don’t strike me as guys who worry about…things.

I do think that based on Ray Rice’s new suspension that if the reports are true that Ray McDonald choked his pregnant girlfriend and committed violence that cause defensive bruising on her arms, then yeah, he’s gonna get a year AND his outright release.

I still believe we can do a complete 180 turn around….but I am also perplexed at the lack of readiness of this team.

Well, let’s just hope we don’t get overzealous and do a 360…

My statement on this is pretty simple.

Ray Rice is a real piece of shit. After seeing what he did, the idea that he had the temerity to show his face in public and use passive language to describe that assault is almost as offensive as the assault.

Roger Goodell is also a real piece of shit. What did he think happened on that elevator??? Ray Rice knocked her UNCONSCIOUS with his morning breath??? I’m glad he’s learning about this and making the effort to get educated. That he is as far along as he is and as uneducated and defended his ignorance for as long as he did is just incomprehensible. In banning Ray Rice for a year, I really hope Roger Goodell brings forth some more mea culpas. No, I don’t think he’s nearly given enough. Not nearly…

Well, so here’s a question… what if the MRI comes back and the Quad injury means Hill is out for 4-6 weeks?

It’s one thing to say, “well, it was because of Davis…we looked good with Hill…” and I buy that…kinda. I can sorta buy that the Rams can get right with Hill…maybe.

But how do the Rams get right if Hill is out for a few games?

    Start Keenum?

I honestly don’t know the answer to this, but it sure isn’t an extra dose of Austin Davis…

I dunno if you can definitively say that Hill was mad at being demoted or mad that “man, I FINALLY get back to being a starter and I get ONE FREAKIN’ HALF before I get a quad? WTF???”

It’s possible it could be any number of things. And… Fisher’s not Belichek. He’s never been shy about talking about “football decisions”.

    Give it a few weeks.

    Lord, I hope I’m wrong.

    But, ya know…scoreboard.

I was wrong about Michael Sam. He made a Practice Squad, so I’m not prescient. Then again, if I were, Sam would have made the Rams and we’d be 13-3, so not sure where I was going with that…

oh, yeah. We’ll get a better feel for the temperature of Fisher’s seat at the bye if not before then. If we get blown out at Tampa, the seat will already be hotter…

The Rams need to play substantially better.

This is GRITS’ issue. I don’t take it personally. I think with all the stadium situations getting resolved, it’s why LA has gotten an executive assigned to it by the NFL. Without LA as much of a bargaining chip for multiple teams, it’s really just vast wealth going untapped.

I prefer…the Notorious Nine, but that sounds like a rap group from the Early 80s, like the Treacherous Three or the Furious Five (actual Rap Groups, btw, seminal in the genre).

That said, I agree, anything with Sack, other than NY Giants’ Sack Exchange, can evoke “suck” if the Rams aren’t on the top of their game.

Our Defense? Horns of a Dilemma! Who do you block? How do you stop them!

the OL in the pre-season didn’t give ZS much room and even Barry Sanders needed the OL do block for him…occasionally. The 1st string OL with Saffold AND Joseph at guard will be a formidable tandem in the run game and Stacy should be able to run as we’ve seen him.

I agree. I mean if Quick and Britt just play like they did in Preseason, then that allows Austin to do SO MUCH MORE than he could last year (other than the one man show he put on in Miami). And with Bailey improving as well…oof.

Makes it hurt that much more for Bradford, but instills that much more confidence in Shaun Hill.

So, yeah, I really do see the Rams being able to score 25 a game.

Why am I surprised that reporters don’t have the background that we do? I don’t know who asked the question, but when I was 10 years old, I loved…LOVED baseball and knew the starting lineup and the starting rotations of every team in the league. So, I still just can’t figure how a sports reporter who is meant to cover a sport can’t quickly do some background and not ask really asinine questions.

I just don’t get it. That answer was on ESPN stats, fer cryin out loud. 30 seconds on his/her iPhone or Droid would have been enough to know the answer. I’m specifically referring to the reporter asking about the “first opening day?” question. smh

I love it. The league is underestimating us.

We’re poised to roflstomp the league in part because I really and truly think there will be teams and staffs that think like this. They’re human and part of these rankings are informed by interviewing league personnel and performing casual polling.

The idea that the Rams are thought of so casually is great for the Rams. It can take a full year for teams to really wrap their heads around that a team isn’t as weak as they thought…

Part of the reason I’m hopeful is that Fisher has that Cheshire cat grin about this season that he hasn’t had before. He KNOWS that his defense under Gregg Williams is about to be unleashed and they haven’t shown the league anything, yet.

With Bradford down, the league is counting the Rams out.

Frankly, I think the Rams defense is going to come out breathing fire. Moreover, I think Shaun Hill is a more emotional leader and that guys respond to him and he’ll lead this team with aplomb.

As I feared, the league doesn’t have room for Sam.

Now the “apology” stories are coming out about “but, but, but…it’s not over for Sam…don’t stop clicking on Michael Sam stories…” trying to say that practice squads are fluid and he could be picked up at any time.

All that’s true… in the abstract. Then again, so could Tim Tebow.

In reality, they both now seem to have about the same chance of making a squad.

Only, Michael Sam can play his position pretty well.

I found it fitting that Michael Sam sacked Johnny Manziel because he’s looked like the ultimate bust. Manziel’s probably going to break their hearts and get multiple chances in the league. I generally don’t play the “fair” card, but THAT’S just unfair…
