This fabric captures energy to power your electronic devices

    by Amina Khan

In the future, your clothes will work for you. A team of scientists led out of the Georgia Institute of Technology has created a fabric that can gather energy from both sunlight and motion, then store it in embedded fibers.

The textile, described in Science Advances, could help pave the way for energy-harvesting clothes and new wearable devices.

Scientists and engineers have been working for years on creating fabrics that, if worn, could harvest energy for the wearer, said senior author Zhong Lin Wang, a nanotechnologist at Georgia Tech.

“The objective was to harvest energy from our living environment, for example, human walking or muscle movement and fabric; the goal is to drive small electronics,” he said. “And this research recently attracted a lot of attention because these days, flexible electronics, wearable electronics, have become very popular and fashionable today. But each of them needs a power source.”

It’s not an easy task to make devices that can be flexible enough to create a material that can actually be sewn into shirts, jackets or other garments. Wang’s team, for one, has been working on various aspects of this early-stage technology for 11 years.

On top of that, any energy would have to be stored in some way that didn’t involve carrying around a bulky battery.

Wang and his team solved these issues by creating a triple-threat (or perhaps, a triple-thread) fabric: It uses dye-sensitized solar cells shaped into long fibers to harvest light energy; it uses fiber-shaped triboelectric nanogenerators to harvest electrostatic charges made by normal movement; and it also uses fiber-shaped supercapacitors to store the energy in electrochemical form.

Under sunlight, the solar cells provide the majority of the power; but indoors or on a cloudy day, the movement-based fibers pick up the slack, Wang said. (He was quick to add that you don’t need to flap your arms or do anything dramatic — the fibers will gather energy from small, normal movements.)

“Our idea is to try to use whatever is available, whenever it’s available,” he said.

The researchers have a roughly 225-square-centimeter (or 35-square-inch) patch of the energy-harvesting fabric that’s roughly as flexible as woven straw. The scientists hope to make it as flexible as common cloth.

The key to that, Wang said, is thinner fibers. Currently they’re 15 to 20 centimeters long and about 2 millimeters wide. Once they reach about half a millimeter in width, they will be much more pliant, he added.

But that’s if you were to make a device entirely out of these fibers. Theoretically, a few of these fibers also could be woven into any kind of textile, such as cotton, and offer some energy-harvesting benefits without sacrificing softness and flexibility, Wang said.

While the technology could allow users to charge phones and wearable devices, it also could make interactive garments — a gown with LED lights, for example — more feasible for fashion designers. The research also could prove useful for building flexible screens, designing heart and other health monitors, and may even find applications in robotics.

“I think it’s an exciting development,” said Thomas Thundat, a physicist in the chemical and materials engineering department at the University of Alberta in Canada, who was not involved in the study.

“Wearable and portable devices are getting popular, and I believe that they will revolutionize our society in the near future,” Thundat said. “But the biggest problem is the batteries.”

Wang’s new fabric helps solve that power problem, said Thundat, who envisioned a range of possible applications.

Electronics embedded in smart clothing could heat you in the winter or keep you cool when working outside in the summer, he said. They could monitor the temperature, humidity and toxins in the environment, warning of extreme pollution or chemical exposure.

Before the technology gets there, however, Wang ticked off the items on his to-do list.

“There’s a lot of things to do: Number one is to get the fiber thinner, so more flexible,” he said. “Number two is to improve the durability or robustness, so they can last longer. And third is, we have to work on continuing to improve the performance. The more power, the better.”

More BS from Comey. He’s trying to stave off a revolt within the FBI. They knew all of this before. Immunity has been granted to all the major conspirators so it isn’t going anywhere until Trump is elected. Of course it is again released on a friday afternoon.

It would not surprise me in the least if there were factions in the FBI that wanted Hillary prosecuted, and if there were factions in the FBI that didnt want her prosecuted.
I would imagine those factions break down prettymuch along ‘party lines’.

I dont think the FBI is above the usual party-politix-stuff. In fact from everything I’ve read they are just like every other organization as far as politics.

Now if Hillary took a gun and murdered someone, then i think all factions in the FBI would want her prosecuted — but this kind of ‘gray area’ stuff — it will always break down according to political views, imho.

The FBI just announced it has re-opened the e-mail investigation because of new evidence.
Probably too late to effect the election, but even with Richard Nixon the nation and his own party had a tipping point where everything was lost.
Hillary’s tipping point is probably steeper than Nixon’s, but I predict it will come, either now, or when she is president and the evidence becomes overwhelming of the corruption staining her.

They’ve been going after Clinton forever.

It really doesn’t matter. They went after Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and they will go after Clinton. It’s what they do. If it would have been Sanders they would have gone after him.

The goal of the Republican party is the destruction of the federal government–short of running the military perhaps. So guilty of anything or not–it doesn’t matter. They are out to push the brakes, take a wrecking ball to it all–and let private enterprise have it all.

If Jesus Christ ran as a Democrat it would be the same thing.

We’ve seen the show over and over. Clinton, Sanders, Biden–pick your Democrat….they’d find things to go after.

    They serve no other purpose.

When confronted with corruption blame the mean republicans then tout those same republicans voting for Hildabeast. Liberalism is a mental disorder.

Eventually, the team is going to get sick of Fisher, to the point, where it will not be a shock to see the players quit on him.

I don’t see that happening. At all. Unlike some of us, the players wouldn’t blame him for everything. But that’s just my version of guessing/mindreading to balance your version.

I’m saying that Fisher is deflecting blame off himself. Fisher is basically saying he didn’t do anything wrong.

Show me examples of coaches who do say they did something wrong.

See, fans have this weird idea that (1) what’s in their heads must be real, (2) therefore the coach must see it that way too, and (3) therefore if he doesn’t say it he’s deflecting blame.

I don’t know why you have this thing that says, basically, he must be accountable to me, which means, he must say what I personally think is true or he’s evading it.

The reality never works that way.

    ..

Man that is wrong always going to the fans are wrong schtick. Its not the fans fault this team is showing a 6-10 reality in week 7. Perhaps Snisher should accept the reality that the clusterfluck of a performance is really their fault. It might lead to real positive change. Like an 8-8 season!

3-4 is still in the hunt…maybe a bit of a longshot but still in the hunt.

9 games to go and we can look back at 2-3 of those losses that could have easily been wins…just turn those around the 2nd half and get on a run.

If a team get’s hot and builds confidence they can roll of 3, 4, 5 wins in a row.

    ————–

Yup. They can still go 12-4

Teams like the Rams (mediocre-wildcard-level) are always a play or two
from winning three or four in a row. I mean, a play here a play there
and they beat the Giants and the Lions and are sitting at 5-2.

That doesn’t mean i think they are a ‘good’ team, but they are
a slowly emerging team, imho. I think they are headed in the right direction.
I think. I wont fight about it

I would think the Bye would help. One would think that. Ya know.

Since this is the bye week when can we start posting threads about something other than this loss?

And 3-4 is not in competition for a playoff spot. 8-8 is rarely good enough. Seattle had to win the division to get in sub .500.

Well my thread had nothing to do with the game. It was about the history of success every team in the division has had since the Rams were last in the playoffs. It was blowing off steam to be sure but I did enough of that about the game during the game. Remember?

If you’re gonna harp on me about that game is it cause you want to make me cry? I’ve got a chimney to clean and tears will streak my newly acquired black face.

I’d like to feel that there is no way the Rams can lose next week.
