It appears to be generally accepted now that non educated white males over 50 overwhelmingly support Trump. If true-then for me the crucial question is WHY ? Are there studies or researched papers or just something besides one’s opinion that answers the question WHY ? I’m sure we all have our opinions but is there any consensus. Mine is this: None of us ever get what we dreamed of when we were young. TV tells us we can get whatever we work at. As we get older we realize that the dreams are no longer even a possibility. So we get angry. Angry people tend to be drawn to demagogues. But what about older white women or black men or women. Why white older men ? If we knew the WHY maybe we could provide some answers that would help us cope better in such a divided country.

Well, i could be wrong, but Trumps base was more than just one faction. It was more than the Southern Racists, it was more than the angry white working-class men.
There was also a big faction of Wealthy, educated white men. I think.

I assume the different factions had different reasons for preferring Trump to Hillary. I really dont think its too hard to figure out those reasons.

Why did white working men prefer Reagan? Bush? Is Trump really a special case?

Hillary got the most votes, of course. But ya know, that dont matter in an American election.

But what about older white women or black men or women. Why white older men ?

I speculate that it is because Trump addressed the unique grievances of the older white males. Conservative media has spent 30 years nurturing resentment of PC culture, and Trump pushed those buttons. The PC culture is a questioning of white patriarchy. Older white women to some degree, and black people of both genders, are not as likely to be annoyed by messages of inclusion.
