    Bennie Cunningham.

Granted Gurley cost the 10th pick.

But then he’s worth that risk, IMO.

i really do think gurley is the risk.

i had posted about it a couple months ago. hoping that it would happen but telling myself that the smart play was drafting an olineman. but when scherff went off the board. and with what la’el collins is going through. it suddenly looked like a real possibility.

i think he’s got the potential to be better than steven jackson was. i really do. and i loved steven. he’s got to learn pass pro from what i’ve read. but he’s got everything else. he can run for power. he can get the tough yards. but then he can bust the big plays. he can catch the ball. he’s potentially a guy that defenses have to scheme against. and the rams did not have that before this draft. i think tre mason can be a very good back. but i don’t see him as a guy who can make his teammates look better. i know that phrase is tossed around a lot. but i believe it to be true about gurley. he’ll make that offensive line look better. he’ll make his qb and wrs look better. imagine this guy as a safety valve. with his speed and his power?

and most importantly with a dominant running game. that defense is gonna be fresh and rested. the dline is gonna get after those qbs. williams will be coming up with schemes to get turnovers.

    well. that’s the idea anyway.

    Yep . That’s the idea, and that’s the kool-aid I’m drinking, too.

I like this draft. My optimism for the season went up.

I’ll say this: This Rams’ leadership group has chutzpah. I’m calling this draft “Back to the Future.” The Rams are hoping that Gurley and all of these run-block-first offensive linemen will usher in a new/old era of ground and pound, even though it’s obvious that the NFL is now a pass-first league.

You still need to score points to win, and the easiest way to score is to pass. I will be very interested to see the balance in this attack. Does pounding the ball mean 50% runs? If so, I don’t believe the Rams will ever be able to win a Super Bowl. You still need to pass it well, because that’s how you win a game where your defense has struggled and now you have to come back. In the playoffs, you can’t rely on just the run, unless you’ve got an all-time great defense like the Seahawks did. I hope the percentage is closer to 40% runs than 50%, on average. The Rams have to be a good passing team, too, to move the chains. Will these new linemen be good at pass protection? Do the Rams have enough linemen right now to be good pass protectors?

A couple of things. Seattle did not even throw the ball 50% of the time last year (and the year before). Last year Dallas threw around 50%. So teams can win doing that.

But then I don’t believe the Rams are going to be a 50% team. They will IMO be a more balanced team. The way I calculate that, a balanced team throws around 53%-56% of the time. Like Baltimore (54.2%) or Green Bay (53.5%).

Here are the top 3 pass heavy teams:

    Falcons: 61.0%
    Saints: 60.2%
    Colts: 59.8%

I don’t think taking those linemen indicate they will have a run-heavy team (50% or less passing). I just think those are Boudreau linemen. The main thing you hear in reading about all of them is not just size, it’s their aggressiveness. Big aggressive guys = Boudreau.

I think they took Gurley because he was there. A blue chip offensive difference maker. If one of the 2 receivers had been there and Gurley was gone, I think they would have taken one of those guys quite happily. I mean maybe I am wrong and they really are changing everything.
