    First the set-up then the question.

    Rams drafted Deacon Jones in the 14th round in 1961. They spotted him on film because they were scouting another player, a running back for a team Jones played against. Scouts kept seeing Jones show up in the film. One reason Jones was so hidden from view is because he played for Mississippi Vocational College. 2 years before, he played for South Carolina State, but got kicked off the team.

    The question.

    Why did Jones get kicked off the South Carolina State team?

    Yes. He was kicked off the team because he attended a civil rights protest. The only place that would take him after that was Miss. Vocational College.

    Yes but what is rarely talked about is that Deacon was a Klan member and was there as a counter protester.

    You’re thinking of Hershell Walker.

    Real Rams fans know all about Deacon Jones. For example, he invented the term “punt.” Which shows pretty smart understanding of all aspects of the game. Not bad for a guy who just played offensive tackle his whole career.
