I would rather do the last FIVE games but that’s a lot of math, and a good stats site already does “last 3 games” for every statistical category. So I’ll settle for that.
Anyway the point of doing the last 5/3 games is that a case can be made that the Rams offense got it much more together after the first 2 games. If that’s true (and I think it is) that means that if you average in the first 2 games into stats and rankings, your numbers give you a false picture.
So here I give the rankings for the last 3 games in a number of categories, and compare it to BOTH the season average AND the avgs. from the 1st 2 games (though I don’t do the 1st 2 games for all categories).
Other considerations: When I do the last 3 games, the ranking reflects how the Rams stand with all teams ranked for last 3 games only. IF the rankings from the first 2 games are so low they are beneath whatever is 32nd now, I list it as “33rd.” It’s just a joking way of saying how bad it was. Also, I red-bold a couple of really significant positive stats.

They’ve been better for 5 games.
I just produced stats for 3 because it was easier. Someone already did the stats for 3.
And they were worse in the first 2 games and still won one.

And against the Giants the offense (345 yds gained) and defense (232 yds against) both played pretty well. Turnovers killed them.

Flawless logic.
The upside to being a Rams fan is heartbreak.
Sprinkles are for winners.

Yes the real problems aren’t the ones usually stated.
We’re told the offense is dead last in yards. No it’s not. The Rams can’t pass. Yes they can.
BUT they kill themselves with turnovers.
PART of that also is that the defense was inconsistent through those 5 games,
AND it is still true that the running game needs to be fixed.
So sorting out myth from fact…some things are way better than people seem to realize. And the obvious problems remain. No running game, up and down defense.
With those 2 problems you create a third. You rely on the passing game on offense, but meanwhile it;s a team and a qb who were set up to do well with a running game and a tough defense.
Nevertheless, even with the turnovers, that offense made gains that go unacknowledged. For example the last time the Rams were anywhere near the top 10 in third down conversions was 2003.
The question then becomes, do they fix the things that ACTUALLY DO need fixing? Because if they do IMO they are set up to do well.

October 30, 2016 at 5:11 pm #56385WinnbradParticipantThere is still the issue of penalties. This is the 5th straight season of being one of the worst in the league. Then again, I just watched Oakland break the record for most penalties in a game, and they still won!?
But to address the point, I’m enjoying the offense. The lack of a running game hurts, but the improvement in the passing game, and especially among the WRs has been great to watch.

I know! I want to go back to winning ugly. 🙂

And the improvement on 3rd down conversions. As I mentioned, they haven’t been that good at that since 2003.
Fix the things that need fixing (running game, inconsistency on defense) and this is actually a very good lookin team.

The problem is I don’t think either of those things will get fixed this season.
The defense has been inconsistent since Fisher’s been here regardless of who the DC was. The running game could improve a little I suppose but to really fix it they may need better players on the o-line.

I don’t look at it that way. The defense under Williams has always been good when it wasn’t suffering from key injuries. Though sometimes it has been good in spite of key injuries. I don’t think Fisher is the operative person, it’s Williams. That’s his defense. And in fact right now, in spite of being up and down, it is ranked 10th in the league. It just can’t have collapses like the Detroit game, though I took that as being more about having both Tru and Quinn out than anything else.
The same OL last year had Gurley doing better, so I don;t know if it’s personnel per se.

Well, in his last 15 starts Gurley has had only one 100 yard game and only three games where he’s averaged at least 4 yards per carry. So the issue with the running game didn’t start this season. It goes back to the middle of last season.
But I guess all we can do is wait and see how things develop over the rest of this season and hope they improve.

Yeah, No Running game,
Inconsistent D, and
Huge Turnovers (pick6’s)So what’s the cause of each one of those,
and are any or all of them fixable ?w

yeah. if it was just limited to this season i wouldn’t be nearly as concerned.
i don’t know what the cause is either, but it’s the responsibility of this coaching staff to figure it out. and it’d be nice if they could figure these things from the start of the season.
defense? i’m more forgiving they’ve dealt with injuries this year and last. and as zn pointed out they’re still ranked pretty high. they did well enough to win the last game.
it’s the running game that has really let this team down.

vIMO.
The D has to stay healthy.
Depending on the qb, the pick 6s are mostly (not always) about a qb who was not supposed to be in that position carrying the team and pressing.
He was supposed to be not the main weapon but an effective game manager on a team that can run and play defense. Then no need to put the entire offense on the qb, no need to press.
In fact given that he was pushed into that role, Keenum IMO has done far better than anyone had any right to expect. Look at my list of “last 5 or last 3 games” improvements. Many of those things are better than they have been in YEARS.
So it all gets down to the running game. Yet this team has run the ball before. No one else got anything out of Stacy. Gurley was great last year. So who knows what is happening, though it’s probably a long perfect storm style list of things. There are different theories, and IMO every theory has a part truth in it.
If they can get that running game up and going, they have the makings of a good team here. Even before Goff gets in there.

That’s funny…..
Penalties still a huge issue… not only gives up yardage, but more importantly it turns the momentum of the game….
