My own bet/hunch is, not week 1, but soon.
How soon?
Man I dunno.
They managed to get a reeled-in Bradford going with no weapons from week 1 in 2010. So it’s possible, from what we have seen.
I just think that JF will be more cautious about it.
I do like the fact that Keenum is the only really successful “Air Raid” college to pro conversion qb out there, and he’s the #2, mentor, and presumptive starter until JG is ready. I think this is a big advantage.
May 2, 2016 at 12:18 pm #43278wvParticipantMaybe they play Keenum until he has a bad game.
Ya know. I mean, maybe it depends on Keenum
as much as Goff.I mean, do you replace Keenum if he is winning?

vMay 2, 2016 at 12:18 pm #43279nittany ramModeratorI’m not sure the words, ‘Keenum’ and ‘really successful’ belong in the same sentence. He has a career passer rating of 79.8 and has had a hard time sticking with teams.
He’s a gamer and I like him, but he isn’t proof that Air Raid QBs can be successful in the NFL.
And I’m not saying Air Raid QBs can’t be successful, just that Keenum’s career doesn’t answer the question one way or the other.

May 2, 2016 at 12:38 pm #43283PA RamParticipantHonestly, I believe he will be the starter week #1. Monday night.
I hope it works.

Well, see, there’s a reason I don’t do career averages. They’re deceptive. They don’t show changes.
In his last 4 starts Keenum had 64% completions, 7 YPA, only 3 TDs but 0 INTs, and a qb rating of 95 (bolstered by one big qb rating game).
That is, he played better than he did in previous years. And that could be because he’s suited to a play action offense. Either way, those last 4 games—arguably the end product of development–make him the only Air Raid qb to play at that level.
He learned the conversion, well enough to be a good #2, especially for another Air Raid conversion rookie.

vTo make room for a qb they traded away picks to take #1? Yes.

May 2, 2016 at 1:59 pm #43289ZooeyModeratorBoy, it would be ballsy to start him week one, in San Francisco, on MNF. Welcome to the Big Time, kid.
I dunno. But it seems to me that if the plan is to play him as soon as possible (i.e. this year), they may as well start from Week 1. Otherwise he isn’t working a full load; he would be working the scout team with backups, and his opportunity to learn diminishes.
Seems to me that they oughta go Week 1 this year, or Week 1 next year. I don’t think Week 9, or whatever, makes sense.
I guess if I had to wager, I would bet he starts Week 1 this year. The future is now.

this. start him as soon as possible.
unless of course the oline is in shambles or he’s so confused you’re worried about crushing his fragile little ego. but my guess is he can handle it. he handled a 1-11 season at cal as an 18 yr old.
the best way to learn is just playing so unless keenum is lights out i figure they’ll just throw him into the fire.
May 3, 2016 at 1:52 am #43313Eternal RamnationParticipantWeren’t the pundits all saying he’s a day one starter , that being his advantage of Wentz ?
May 3, 2016 at 2:21 am #43320MackeyserModeratorNo doubt, week 1.
Just like Foles, he’s going to look lights out in practice and they go so Vanilla in pre-season that unless he just falls apart, which I don’t expect, then they’ll feel comfortable with him and using part/most of the playbook for the first game and they’ll tailor it to him and expand it as the season goes.
Keenum will get the majority of the backup reps and Foles will also get some.
Mannion will be Oliver Twist, asking “Please, Sir, may I have a rep?”
Honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me if they kept Keenum and Foles and simply waived Mannion or tried to trade him once pre-season got started…since it’s not like they’re gonna give him reps, anyway.

You really think the Rams will get rid of Mannion? Only Goff and Mannion are under contract past this year. It would make no sense for this or any FO to cut Mannion. imo

May 6, 2016 at 7:44 pm #43525HerzogParticipantI don’t want him to start week 1. There’s just no way he will be ready. I actually like Keenum and think he was the only reason we won anything last year.
Goff needs to learn the playbook, learn the offense, and get used to the NFL speed….I do NOT want him under center week 1
May 6, 2016 at 11:57 pm #43534MackeyserModeratorFisher leaked through Mike Silver that they are also entertaining trade offers for Keenum.
Wish I was kidding…

I feel the same way.
But after Bradford in 2010, I don’t think a rookie starting week 1 would be catastrophic.
There are all sorts of people guaranteeing they know when he will start because they have read this or that tea leaf.
I am just going to let it play out, and don’t have much stake in predicting it.
It will be in 2016 though. Maybe not until the superbowl.
May 7, 2016 at 5:52 pm #43586AgamemnonParticipantI don’t think it makes much difference in this case, although I mostly prefer the wait-and-prepare to the sink-or-swim. Once he is in there, he stays in there. If Keenum starts, he will at some point have a couple of bad games and then they will put Goff in. With a strong defense and run game, why not start the rookie?
