Waldman on Goff/Wentz and much, much more…This is the Footballguys podcast on day 1 of the draft, so lots of stuff here going through the entire 1st round.

Crazy people like me will listen to the entire 4 hours…

    Some highlights from Waldman…
1.People would have had a different view of Fisher if he had gotten his hands on Cutler who he really wanted.
    2. Goff is rated ahead of Winston who he had #1 QB last year.
    3. Goff showed him a lot in that Utah game. Rated him highly off that game. There was so much more than those 5 picks. Goff always keeps you in the game even though the players around him aren’t good enough.

There is much more on Goff and Wentz. Just listen to the erudtie but loquacious Matt Waldman…

Go to the 32 min mark for Waldman on Goff.

I watched that Utah game, too.

He had moments. And… he showed that a defense that baits him can go underneath ALL DAY and eat his lunch.

He just didn’t face any other defenses that could either match up like that or defend like that.

EVERY defense in the NFL can do that to a rookie QB.

    Ask Jameis Winston…

I dunno Mack. He didn’t face any other tough defenses in 3 years at Cal? And I’ll tell you what he won’t repeat. Facing a tough defense with one of the worst OLs in college football combined with one of the worst defenses (if not THE worst) in college football.

I didn’t say he didn’t face tough defenses. I said he didn’t face any other defenses that had him scoped out like that and had the personnel and scheme to BAIT him like that and be successful.

In the NFL, every team should have the personnel and scheme to do it.

As Jameis Winston found out when he kept throwing INTs at first, he had to not take the bait.

Fisher is going to start him game 1. That’s a gimme. You don’t put the guy who’s going to start the season on the trade block which Fisher did by leaking through Mike Silver that they were open to trading Keenum.

And Foles is gone either now or the end of this year, which means that Mannion will have Preseason 2017 to get whatever meaningful snaps he’ll need to turn into a backup who can be counted on to step up and be the man if Goff goes down. And…he’ll have played ZERO meaningful snaps in any pre-season or regular season games all while getting garbage reps in 2015 and 2016…

It’s the dumbest transition ever and heaven forbid anything happens to Goff (cuz, ya know, nothing’s ever happened to a QB drafted #1 overall before) or worse, Goff doesn’t work out like Fisher hopes, then there’s no backup plan.

Kirk Cousins was developed at least so that he COULD step in. Mannion? Yeah, right. Mannion’s been developed like a mushroom…a little moisture and left in the cool darkness under the front porch.

I dunno Mack. I;ll let time tell. But I don’t have any of the doubts about Goff you do. Or about the Rams offense. I expect him to do well. I would be very surprised if he didn’t turn out to be at least as good as Bulger or Everett in their best years (which is more than good enough on a solid team), and in fact I think he could be better than that.
