“Mixed results” sounds about right. Something’s afoot with that defense. They did play in the playoffs, but then what changed for that to happen? Did some of the guys finally put in the work? Did Wade finalize a sense who they were and what they could do? Then they let their DL coach go (Bill Johnson), and he came to the Rams with a strong reputation…not sure what that involved. Last year they went for some top physical talents in free agency and trades (Suh, Peters, Fowler); this year they went for savvy vets. Is that a hint of some intention, or is it just a simple difference between the market and cap space last year v. this year? And of course people remark on communication break downs on D last year. Another thing is, they have a long list of LBs coming off of surgeries–Obo, Fox, Ebukam–so we’re not even sure what they have there.
So they played well in the post-season, but then there’s a list of questions.
We expected a lot out of the D last year and never got it until Dallas in the playoffs.
Hard to say whether (or how much) Wade factors into the regular season “downs” but we probably agree you have to give him credit for the post-season “ups.”
