https://www.yahoo.com/gma/coronavirus-updates-miami-close-beaches-july-4-weekend-085300684–abc-news-topstories.htmlThe co-founder of ReOpen Maryland, who organized rallies to pressure Gov. Larry Hogan to lift the state’s stay-at-home order, said he has tested positive for COVID-19.
Tim Walters, a former Republican candidate for the General Assembly, said that he had a dry cough for months but it recently worsened. He said he then began to experience an excruciating headache, a fever and the inability to focus with one of his eyes, which led to vertigo.
Walters, 53, a diabetic who has had mini-strokes, said he went to an emergency room Monday and was diagnosed with the virus.
“Here I am months after not wearing a mask at rallies, churches and so on, and so it’s funny how capricious this thing is,” he said in a Facebook video.
Walters said he doesn’t plan to provide health officials with the people he’s had close contact with for the contact tracing program.

June 28, 2020 at 1:52 am #117246znModeratorfrom Roughly half the Twitter accounts pushing to ‘reopen America’ are bots, researchers found
There’s been a surge in bot activity in the past month in online discussions about reopening America from COVID-19 shutdowns, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University said this week.
The researchers analyzed over 200 million tweets discussing COVID-19 and found that roughly half the accounts were likely bots.
They identified the bots by looking for accounts that tweeted more frequently than humanly possible or whose location appeared to rapidly switch among different countries.
It’s unclear who’s behind the surge in bot activity or whether they’re originating from the US or abroad.June 28, 2020 at 8:30 am #117253znModeratorIn Sunday's NYT: "Just as the country needed to stay shut down longer, many states — mostly with Republican governors — took their foot off the brake, and Mr. Trump cheered them on." https://t.co/hLmt41iJlN

“…COVID-19 was announced in Wuhan (China) in early December in 2019 and it would reach every place worldwide later, including Europe. The first case in Europe was announced in France in late January 2020. This chronology on the evolution of the disease can change according to a study led by the University of Barcelona, in collaboration with AigĂĽes de Barcelona.
Researchers detected the presence of the virus that caused the disease in samples of waste water in Barcelona, collected in March 12, 2019. These results, sent to a high impact journal and published in the archive medRxiv, suggest the infection was present before knowing about any case of COVID-19 in any part of the world….see link”

July 2, 2020 at 7:03 am #117446znModeratorfrom U.S. coronavirus cases rise by nearly 50,000 in biggest one-day spike of pandemic
More than half of new U.S. cases each day come from Arizona, California, Florida and Texas, home to 30% of the country’s population. All four states plus 10 others saw new cases more than double in June.
The daily increase in new cases could reach 100,000 unless a nationwide push was made to tamp down the fast-spreading virus, Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told a U.S. Senate committee on Tuesday.
“We can’t just focus on those areas that are having the surge. It puts the entire country at risk,” Fauci said.
The rise in cases is not just the result of more testing. Hospitalizations are also skyrocketing.

July 2, 2020 at 11:05 am #117483Billy_TParticipantI still don’t understand why responsible media, politicians, public figures aren’t emphasizing this, cuz I think it might wake up the undecideds at least:
Reported deaths for the seasonal flu are always many times greater than the known, “official” case numbers — to offset the guarantee of massive undercounting. From my readings, it’s usually in the 3X to 7X range.
As in, if there are 1000 “confirmed” flu deaths in any given year, the public is told there were 3000 to 7000, roughly, give or take.
That means, right now, reported Covid-19 deaths should be 390,000 to 910,000 . . . as of July 2nd . . . again, roughly speaking, give or take.
I’m thinking those numbers, and that Apples to Apples comparison, might make some take this more seriously, and that needed to happen back in January, if not before.

What Minnesota’s Protests Are Revealing About Covid-19 Spread
<em.After George Floyd’s killing, experts warned that demonstrations could set off new waves of infections. But early testing in Minneapolis tells another story.
https://www.wired.com/story/what-minnesotas-protests-are-revealing-about-covid-19-spread/Dr. Monique Tello, clinical instructor at Harvard Medical School
we now have data showing that the COVID-19 infection rate among protesters has been remarkably low….A recent study of contact tracing for new infections showed that most transmissions occurred between people interacting indoors for 15 minutes or more. Analysis of 28 COVID-19 “superspreading events” around the globe revealed commonalities: all were indoors, and involved people without masks talking face-to-face, singing, or sharing a meal.
“For the most part, we’re not going to see a big increase [in cases] because people are wearing masks and they’re being held outside,” said Dr. Eric Bing, professor of global health at Southern Methodist University.
Dr. Philip Huang, the director of Dallas County Health and Human Services…it’s unlikely the protests alone caused Dallas County’s infections to skyrocket, Huang said.
, the National Bureau of Economic Research released a study that debunks the notion that the demonstrations would deliver a deluge of cases. Its authors found “no evidence that urban protests reignited COVID-19 case growth” in the 315 U.S. cities they surveyed. In part, this is because protesters were vigilant in wearing masks, the authors state.
Dr. Joseph Chang, chief medical officer at Parkland Health & Hospital System: ” When two people wear masks standing next to one another, the chance of transmissibility is less than 1%”.
Protests against systemic racism held in 300-plus U.S. cities following the death of George Floyd did not cause a significant increase in coronavirus infections, according to a team of economists who have published their findings in a 60-page paper released by the National Bureau of Economic Research; these somewhat surprising results are supported by Covid-19 testing data in many populous cities where demonstrations were held.
Florida does extensive contact tracing to figure out where people who tested positive have been before they got sick. And the state’s health experts are finding a clear pattern — it’s not leading back to the outdoor protests; it’s leading to indoor places where young adults go to hang out and party.
Of the 3,200 people tested so far at the four popup sites across the metro, 1.8 percent have tested positive for Covid-19, says s Kristen Ehresmann, the Minnesota Department of Health director of infectious disease.. HealthPartners, one of the largest health care providers in Minnesota, also reported to the state that it had tested about 8,500 people who indicated that attendance at a mass gathering was the reason they wanted a test. Among them, 0.99 percent tested positive. These numbers have been one of the few pleasant surprises since the outbreak began, says Ehresmann. “Right now, with the data available to us, it appears there was very little transmission at protest events,” she says.
July 2, 2020 at 7:34 pm #117511znModeratorTo understand why so many of us are so mad at @GovAbbott, it’s not just that he waited until *July 2* (in the face of indisputable evidence of a growing problem) to do this; it’s that, way back in April, he *overrode* local mask requirements—such as the one we had here in Austin. https://t.co/BtmfMLaqcI
