I have a completely unproveable suspicion about Rams draft picks. I think it’s collaborative stacking the board before the draft but I also think McV gets favorites and tends to prefer certain guys with the first pick which is of course usually a 2nd rounder. After the 2nd round McV defers more to the personnel guys. Avila doesn’t fit this but look at the list of Rams 2nd rounders since 2017. They’re mostly skill guys who didn’t meet 2nd round expectations. Arguably, Avila aside, Akers might be the only one that is worthy of round 2 status. This might explain why the Rams 3rd round picks are usually better than their second round picks.
