I like him a lot and I think he’s a top-level coach. His public statements often are maddening, and increasingly so.

The Rams hired Brandon Staley 53 weeks ago. Four years ago, he was a Div. III defensive coordinator. What a fantastic rise.

McVay’s staff is now notoroious for being poached. May sound immature, but have been incredibly frustrated with the Chargers since they moved to Los Angeles.

First the stadium, then Hard Knocks, now Brandon Staley. They’ve also attempted to steal the Lakers. Headaches!

    Tommy@RamTommyInLA
In 2045 every NFL team’s head coach will have came from McVay’s coaching staff

    Gary Klein@LATimesklein
In the last few weeks, Brandon Staley twice emphasized that Rams assistants Aubrey Pleasant, Ejiro Evero and Eric Henderson were more than ready for larger roles.

    Lindsey Thiry@LindseyThiry
With Brandon Staley’s departure, the Rams will be onto their third defensive coordinator in three seasons. It will be interesting if Sean McVay decides to promote from within (Joe Barry, Aubrey Pleasant, Ejiro Evero or Eric Henderson) or look outside the organization

    Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
If the Rams look internally for a DC promotion – among a great staff of candidates – they can look no further than Aubrey Pleasant or Eric Henderson. If they’d like to continue Staley’s system, especially – so much emphasis on DL movement and CB rotation. Two phenomenal coaches.

Brandon Staley is going to put together a staff as well, and two names who could draw interest for OC job are Kevin O’Connell (current Rams OC) and Thomas Brown (current Rams RBs coach). Both have previously been highly endorsed by McVay especially as developers of young talent.

Cam Akers and RBs coach Thomas Brown developed a strong bond in a year full of challenges. On Brown, Akers says, “to have a coach like him is a blessing. He didn’t go easy on my, and I’m grateful for that. I’m grateful to have a coach that coaches me hard, that doesn’t allow me to come in and take days off. That’s who he is every day, he’s the same guy. He demands growth on and off the field, and just to have that kind of coach is a blessing.”

The Rams installed the Wildcat package with Cam Akers only recently. To win a math advantage up front for Akers, Jared Goff has to sell it out wide. I asked Cam if he slung it a couple times in practice to Goff – and how were his hands? (laughing) “Let’s just say J-G can catch.”

Jalen Ramsey again speaking with such high praise for CBs coach Aubrey Pleasant, who he says could and should absolutely elevate into a potential DC role. Ramsey has had the best year of his career, he says much credit is owed to Pleasant’s coaching and guidance.

Ramsey says JJ3 and Troy Hill have meant a lot to him. “Without Troy, and his versatility…I wouldn’t be able to be who I was this year” (in terms of how he can move around). “Nothing but respect for him…and same with JJ.” Says he’s played with great safeties, and that JJ3 is the most complete, the most versatile safety he’s ever played with. “He has been so versatile, and been able to do so much, it means a lot…hopefully they can figure something out.”

I’m expecting both Hill & Johnson to be playing somewhere else next year. My prediction, some team will give Hill at least an $8M per year deal, and Johnson a $10+M per year deal. Number 2 CB needs to be addressed.

    Rampage2K-

Kornhieser said it best about the Green Bay game with this simple statement about the Goff/McVay issues when he said “Goff wasn’t the Rams problem, Rodgers was…”

Sources: The Rams blocked OC Kevin O’Connell from interviewing for the same job with the Chargers. They really value O’Connell, and the job he did for them this year.

Lines of communication remain open, so things could change. But that’s where the Rams stand now.

    Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
Brandon Staley wanted to interview Rams OC Kevin O’Connell for an OC job on his staff, but so far request has been denied by Rams, sources said (lateral move). Staley saw KOC as a guy who could help w/ Justin Herbert’s development and call plays; McVay does not want to lose him.

Did the Rams receive any compensation for losing Staley?

I’m not exactly clear about the new NFL policy.

I believe compensation is for minorities. A strategy to get more jobs for them.

    Thanks.

Sounds like a good program. So if the Rams hire Morris, Atlanta likely receives comp, right?

Since it’s not a subtraction from teams, but an addition from a separate pool, there is no incentive to deny access to coaches . . . if I understand it correctly.

    Again, I like it.

No Atlanta let him go. So he wasn’t their employee to lose.

I’ll add that, strictly in my opinion, McVay’s frustration with his offense (including in himself) that was apparent throughout the season seemed to lean toward bringing DC who he has known for years and who has been a HC. McVay seems to want to throw himself into the offense.

The bond between Morris and McVay is really strong. Have been on two staffs together as they were developing into current lives as HC/interim HCs, and basically did their football version of growing up together. Morris has coached a lot of different systems on both sides of LOS.

    𝕋𝕠𝕞 – 𝕃𝔸 ℝ𝕒𝕞𝕤@TL_LARams
McVay and Goff’s OC/Pass Game Coordinator/QB coach by year:
2017 – LaFleur (OC) and Olson (QB)
2018 – Waldron (PGC) and Taylor (QB)
2019 – Waldron (PGC and QB)
    2020 – O’Connell (OC) and Waldron (PGC)

As you can see, there is no consistency in the coaching set up from year to year. It’s no surprise McVay blocked O’Connell from interviewing with the Chargers

3 days removed so now I can say good luck to the Packers. But…you got really lucky AD got hurt the week before. No guarantees in ball but I’m sure that’s a different game if he’s healthy.
