Moderatorfrom https://www.therams.com/news/brandon-staley-building-around-aaron-donald-jalen-ramsey
Staley knows the best way to put Donald in a position to succeed, and in turn the defense as a whole, is to take as much attention away from him as possible. Thus, as he shapes his approach to Los Angeles’ defense, one of his main goals will be just that.
“We want to make sure we can get him as many isolations as possible,” Staley said during a May video conference. “If we can get Aaron to play against one person as opposed to two, then our odds of being successful go through the roof.”
…
“As far as the defense, I can’t tell you if I love it or not because I didn’t actually go on the grass and do anything yet,” Donald said during a May video conference. “But as far as the scheme of things and the way he’s going about it, trying to do certain things and the different installs we’ve been getting thus far, I’m definitely starting to like it a lot. I’m anxious to actually get on the grass and get to play and see how this thing plays out.”

There’s definitely some irony in the fact that all of these NFL owners donated to the Trump campaign and now his mismanagement of COVID is going to cost them all far more than the tax breaks he gave them.Doug Farrar@NFL_DougFarrar
You know the whole “Nickel is the new base” thing? Very true, as nickel made up 59% of all dropbacks. But this surprised me — in 2019, defenses played more dime (20.9%) than base (18%). Which means that defenses are putting six DBs on the field more than they’re putting four.Michael Giardi@MikeGiardi
Which then makes you wonder when a team is gonna go 2 and 3 tight ends and shove it down opponents throats? I mean aside from Baltimore.July 9, 2020 at 11:52 am #117783zn
Moderatorfrom RANKING NFL OFFENSES BY ANALYTICS USAGE
https://www.rotoworld.com/node/189871
4. Rams (HC Sean McVay)
4th Down Aggressiveness: 26th
Pass Rate on Early Downs: 4th
Pass Rate While Trailing: 1st
Play-Action Rate: 3rd
Downfield Pass Rate: 19th
Middle of the Field Pass Rate: 20th
Pre-Snap Motion Percentage: 13th
Outside Run Rate: 15th
Shotgun Run Rate: 32nd
Offensive Pace: 2nd
McVay and the Rams are a candidate to climb into Tier 1 next season if they become way more aggressive with their fourth-down decision making (26th). It’s the primary blimp on McVay’s in-game analytical profile, and it’s the one that’s easiest to fix overnight. Outside of that, McVay runs one of the few under-center offenses that I like, largely because they are uptempo (2nd) and utilize play action (3rd) and pre-snap motion (13th). McVay also adjusts his pass rate to reflect his team’s in-game winning percentage, jumping up all the way to an 84% pass rate (1st) when the Rams have a 25% or lower chance of winning. If his offensive line wasn’t so bad and if Jared Goff wasn’t so affected by pressure, we’d likely see McVay utilize more deep passes (19th), too. I’m still in on McVay as one of the top offensive minds in the game. With that said, I believe the Rams have some work to do with their salary cap and drafting strategies.

DL Sebastian Joseph-Day
Staley has stressed the importance of versatility on the defensive line, and Joseph-Day has plenty of it. at 6-foot-4, 310 pounds, Joseph-Day can play any of the three positions on the D-line. He’s most comfortable at nose tackle and was best at that spot last season, but he can give Brockers a breather at defensive end when needed, too.
His playing time will be limited due to the presence of Brockers and Robinson, but Joseph-Day is a good run defender who does a nice job keeping his head up and staying in his gap. Here’s an example of that from last season as he makes a tackle for loss against the Bucs.
As a pass rusher, Joseph-Day has a relentless motor and never gives up on a play. His pursuit is always strong, which is a testament to his work ethic.
Against the Buccaneers, he initially got stopped by the center, but he looped around after Donald flushed Jameis Winston from the pocket. Joseph-Day made the tackle before Winston could pick up any yardage, bringing him down for a sack.
His other sack came against the Cardinals and Kyler Murray. Joseph-Day shakes loose from the center by using his strength to push him to the side, opening up a path to the quarterback. He swallows Murray up before he can elude the sack, taking him down for a big loss.

AD is the best Defensive player that I have seen in a Rams Uniform. Yes, I’m a long term Ram Fan. Blackout games on the radio when I was a kid. Newspapers and Monday Night Football highlights to actually see the guys in action…….I’m a freak about football and my Rams! Played HS/College and coached HS for 25+ years…….
Bottom line, here’s how I watch the Rams when they are on defense. Break the huddle and look for #99….SERIOUSLY!……I look for AD immediately, then I watch only him throughout the first 2/3rds of the play, unless he’s bearing down for a sack or the DLINE is converging on the QB. I watch the replay(s) if I miss anything.
When you watch the games that way, you begin to notice that AD is a man among boys out there. He’s off the ball and creating havoc on the play, immediate problem for the OLINE once the ball is snapped. He ragdolls 300+lb men, ruins running plays 3 yds in the backfield, blocking schemes become irrelevant because AD is like a Bull trying to buck a Cowboy, he’s all over the place. He NEVER takes a play off! AD is a DT that runs down RB’s, flipping amazing!
Donald and Dickerson are my 2 favorite Rams EVER! You know you are watching greatness, appreciate it because you won’t see it again…..#99 is IMHO, the best EVER!
