@SI_PeterKing pointed out in his column today there is about $1B in cap space for what is, generally, a mediocre free-agent crop. That would drive up prices for the likes of Lamarcus Joyner and Sammy Watkins, which is why the Rams must be very strategic in how they use the tag.

My sense has been that the Rams’ priority is to retain Lamarcus Joyner. A long-term deal makes more sense for Joyner and the tag makes more sense for Sammy Watkins. But if they think they could lose Joyner to free agency, they may use the tag on him. Deadline is 1 PT Tuesday.

Preferred course of action would’ve been a long term deal with Joyner and Watkins playing a year under the tag, but if it becomes a matter of losing one or the other, I just can’t imagine choosing Watkins over Joyner

At this point I’d be surprised if the #Rams don’t utilize their franchise tag on either Lamarcus Joyner or Sammy Watkins.

    1. Yes, deadline is tomorrow. No, it’s not about which position tag is cheaper. They Actively working to sign both to long-term deals.
    2. But at some point it might come down to: Who do they feel they absolutely have to lock up for 2018 season?
    3. And not risk losing in free agency.

Sense is they aren’t at: “one more likely than other” stage. Yet.

I sill believe they can bring back both, although that might depend on – I believe – Watkins’ market outside their building. All it takes is one team to feel they HAVE to have him and change those dynamics as a result.

If you’re the Rams, I don’t think you can risk losing Joyner. You’d prefer not to lose Watkins either, but in 2017 the offense was great with Watkins basically as a speedy decoy. Joyner likely would be tougher to replace at this point.

Really sad to see @RQuinn94 go. One of my favorite @RamsNFL. Man we have some big shoes to fill

I’ll admit, I’m sad to see @RQuinn94 go from the Rams locker room. Genuinely nice, insightful guy who will definitely be missed.

The final four teams expected to be vying for free-agent quarterback Kirk Cousins are the Broncos, Cardinals, Jets and Vikings, per league sources.

Writing a story on the ways teams gather info about prospects from other prospects. Rams GM Les Snead recalled multiple OL prospects in 2014 saying of Aaron Donald, “I wish he hadn’t been at the Senior Bowl too, because now I’m not gonna get drafted.”

McVay said “it’ll be fun” competing against the 49ers under Jimmy Garoppolo, but he’s still mindful about the Seahawks. “A lot of people forget that with two games left, we’re really playing them almost for the division. Seattle is still a force to be reckoned with.”

    Matt Barrows@mattbarrows
In 2011, the #49ers’ 10-man draft that began with Aldon Smith and Colin Kaepernick, in part, earned Trent Baalke exec. of the year. Last season, only Daniel Kilgore (fifth), Colin Jones (6th) and Mike Person (7th) played a snap.

It’ll be hard for the Steelers and Le’Veon Bell to do a deal. Why? B/c Bell playing out tag will lead to either …

    1) Getting $14.54M this year AND free agency next year.
    2) Getting $35.48M over the next 2 years (2 tags).

Steelers basically have to beat those outcomes.

i’d rather tag joyner, if they can’t sign one to a long term deal. i really like reynolds and his potential.
