    Last year with a banged up OL and those longer triple drag routes forced JG to hold the ball longer allowing the D to pressure him…this year he is getting the ball out a lot quicker….

    so far this year, it has been the quickest release time to his past years with McVay….

    2020/2.75

    2019/2.8

    2018/2.95

    2017/2.93

    goff’s having a solid year, but he’s also throwing far more shorter, higher percentage passes than he’s ever thrown before, by a wide margin, which is driving a lot of his numbers, especially his high completion %… and it’s clearly by design, check downs aren’t driving it, and it’s something we haven’t seen from mcvay before…. headed into week 6 no qb has a lower depth of pass average than goff, his average is even lower than brees (who is next to last), a guy who finishes very near the bottom, or at the very bottom, year in and year out.

    goff’s average depth of pass:

    2020 – 5.7
    2019 – 7.3
    2018 – 8.2
    2017 – 8.0

    but guess what? goff ranks 2nd best in completion % on passes of 20 yards or more in the air…. he’s 7 of 10 for a 70% completion rate, the league average is just 41.4%… the flipside is goff also ranks 27th in pass attempts of 20+ yards in the air (as a % of total pass attempts) – only 6.9% of his passes have been thrown 20+ yards in the air vs a league average of 10.8%.

    There are so many good reasons to play that way. Short passes.
    First, it gets your QB into a nice rhythm. Gives em confidence.
    Second, it takes stress off the OLine.
    Third, it demoralizes the opposing pass-rushers. They have to chase ballcarriers all day.
    Fourth, it fits this team because the skillplayers are such good blockers.

    There will be teams that adjust to it better than others, but its not like the Rams cant also throw Medium and Deep. The Rams can counter-adjust.

    And its not just ‘short passes’. Some have been kinda ‘tricky’ short passes. Not just obvious dump-offs.

    Plus, you have Goff rolling out more, which i LOVE to see. Get him the fuck away from great pass-rushers.

    At times, the Rams drives have looked just a bit like Bill Walsh drives.
    Going from Jeff Fisher’s offense to he McV offense has been fun to watch. Its just more…interesting. I wish the Rams played Belichick this year. I’d like to see if McV could do better this time.

    Last year’s 2.8 number tells me JG was getting rid of the ball earlier than he wanted or before the route had fully developed due to issues with the O-line. McV did help them with designed rollouts but the line also started getting up to speed at the end of the year.

    This year they have a designed short game…but also still have all the deeper routes in the book…building a bigger arsenal to choose from…add that JG is very comfortable in the system and the receivers all have very reliable hands…means the offense is starting to hit their stride.
