i don’t know if i’m reading it all wrong, but it seems like all the attention on the rams’ offense has been around the receivers and goff.
and of course, the oline gets ignored. but that’s to be expected.
but it feels like gurley has had a quiet season so far. even though he is again on pace for over 2000 yards from scrimmage. even though he is on pace for a career high in touchdowns (24 – 16 rushing and 8 receiving). even though he is averaging an insane 12.9 yards per catch. i mean for a running back that’s just ridiculous. and if you don’t think he can keep that pace, ya gotta remember he averaged 12.3 yards per catch the previous season. that’s marshall faulk-like.
maybe it’s cuz he really hasn’t busted out with a dominant rushing game yet. he’s had some explosive catch and run plays. but not a dominating rushing game. his longest run is only 23 yards this season. so he’s been steady but not superb so far.
i actually expect that to change. if goff continues to light defenses up downfield, they’ll have to adjust. and that should open up things for gurley.
i’m just saying all this because gurley is right at his peak years. goff’s got a long career ahead of him. obviously. qbs just have more tread on their tires than rbs. but gurley’s got maybe 4 years left (including this season) as his peak years for a running back if he’s lucky. usually the drop off is huge after this. so this 4 year window starting now will be where gurley really establishes his legacy as an nfl running back. it’s just a special time to be witnessing this guy do his thing. i want to savor every moment of it. i felt the same way about steven jackson. but his career was derailed by injuries and playing on some really really bad teams. gurley is hitting his peak years at just the right time. with the right supporting cast. with the right coaches. 4 years is not a long time. it’ll be over before you know it.
goff on the other hand will have maybe a decade more of playing left in him after gurley is done (maybe even more with all these new rules). hopefully. hopefully, things work out right. and he is a ram for a long time. but with gurley, i feel like half his career is almost over. i wanna see something special happen these next few years.
