Shocked. Todd Gurley? Never saw that coming. Not sold on it. I was hoping for trade down. This pick makes no sense.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2015/profiles/todd-gurley?id=2552475Analysis
Strengths Rare blend of speed and power. Immense power in legs and shows balance through contact. Shreds arm tackles and has speed to house it. Very hard to tackle on an angle. Professional, decisive runner. Presses line of scrimmage to set up his cut-back runs. Gets downhill with knee bend and forward lean, staying small through the hole. Uses quick, tight steps to second level. Will sink and explode into tackler or side-step and jet, causing hesitation in downhill safeties with their approach. Converts “speed to power” between tackles and around corner. Rarely looks to run out of bounds and finishes his runs. Able to factor out of the backfield with soft hands and ability to adjust to throws. In 2014, churned out an amazing 61.9 percent of his rushing yardage after contact. Strong hands and carries ball tight to his body. Only three fumbles in 510 carries.Weaknesses Missed three games in 2013 due to ankle injury and tore his ACL in 2014. Questions about whether he’ll return back to his play speed are a big concern. Vision is average. Still gaining feel as a zone runner. Too locked into looking for cutback lanes when play-side run is open. Can get better at setting up blockers in space. Average creativity in tight quarters. Patience and tempo as a runner can improve. Quick passing attack limited his protection opportunities but was very average when given the shot.
Draft Projection Round 1NFL Comparison Marshawn Lynch
Bottom Line The rehab work and NFL Scouting Combine medicals will be extremely important for Gurley’s draft stock as teams assess his potential durability as an NFL running back. He played less than 40 percent of his team’s offensive snaps over the last three years, so there is plenty of tread still on the tires. Has the talent to be a top-five NFL running back, but ACL tear clouds the short-term picture.

Hard to gauge consensus on draft prospects. Know one team has #UGA’s Todd Gurley No. 1 overall on the board. Safe to say, not everyone does

Todd Gurley most talented player in 2015 NFL Draft
By Bryan Fischer
The 2015 NFL Draft might finally be the one that ends the talk of running backs being devalued. At least two players at the position could be taken in the first round this year, and several others will probably be off the board before the end of Day 2 in Chicago.
One of this year’s most debated running backs is Georgia’s Todd Gurley, who, had he not torn his ACL last season, would seemingly have been a lock as a top-10 pick. Instead, where Gurley goes in the draft is a mystery that will last until draft day.
Count NFL Media analyst Brian Baldinger among those who believe Gurley’s talent makes him too good to pass up — assuming your team doctors have cleared his knee. In fact, Gurley is Baldinger’s choice as the most talented player in the draft, and he even compared Gurley to another superstar at the position in the NFL.
“The talent and the ability that he has is unquestioned,” Baldinger said. “This guy knows how to go North-South, he’s got all of the agility. We’ve got to see about the knee, I know. But I just have this feeling this guy is going to be special. A lot in the way I thought about Adrian Peterson coming out of Oklahoma in 2007 and how he was going to be special, I feel the same way about this kid.”
NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah, who has long touted Leonard Williams as his most talented player in the draft and ranks him No. 1 in his Top 50 prospects, ranks Gurley as his No. 12 prospect.
Peterson burst onto the scene in the league after the Vikings selected him with the seventh overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, and he’s been one of the most consistent and productive players in the league when he’s been on the field.
Still, that’s a high bar for Gurley to clear, even if he’s recovering from the same injury Peterson suffered in the 2011 season, at a much later stage in his career.
NFL.com mock drafts have Gurley going as high as No. 6 overall to the New York Jets and as low as No. 26 to the Baltimore Ravens, quite a wide spread for one of the top players at his position.
No matter where Gurley winds up though, he’ll certainly be entering the league with high expectations.

Gurley was also a world-class hurdler and sprinter for the school’s track & field team. He competed for Team USA in the 110-metres hurdles at the 2011 World Youth Championships in Athletics, where he placed 3rd in the prelims with a career-best time of 13.66 seconds,[4] but finished 15th overall in the semifinals.[5] Also a top competitor in the 100-meter dash, he ran a personal-best time of 10.70 seconds in the prelims of the 2011 NCHSAA 2A State Track Meet, placing 2nd.[6]============================

LOVE the pick…I screamed and ran around the house. Best player on the board, freak athlete.
Best RB I’ve ever scouted. I wanted him in horns 3 years. I was only sad we drafted mason last year because I thought it meant we couldn’t take Gurley this year.
April 30, 2015 at 9:48 pm #23473HramParticipantESPN said the Rams had Mariota 1 and Gurley 2. Regardless, if one of your top two guys is on the board at 10, you take him.
Unexpected pick. But, if he comes back healthy (read a report that it was a clean ACL tear meaning not a lot of other collateral damage) and he’s projected as the best back since Adrian Peterson then it makes sense. BPA and fits with the team identity.
Can get some damn fine Guards and centers in the 2nd and 3rd rounds this year. This draft is deep in interior lineman and I expect they will take at least one in the next two rounds and probably another by the end of the draft.
Glad we didn’t reach for Oline help.
Bet we come up with something Barksdale will agree to within the next couple of weeks. 🙂

April 30, 2015 at 10:02 pm #23479bnwBlockedNo one buys a lame horse and expects great production. Why a young man who has been injured each of the past two seasons is considered different is a head scratcher. Mason ran well when finally given a chance. Does this mean when Gurley can play they platoon the position? A part time player first round pick? Another Tavon Austin-ish pick?
The upside to being a Rams fan is heartbreak.

My view? Of those they only needed OL. With a strong running game they can make do at WR. I doubt there was a qb they could have gotten this year who is an improvement over Keenum. As for OL, it’s an OL deep draft.
It makes them better because (ideally) with a rotation of Gurley and Mason, they can run on anyone.
I expect any OL the Rams put on the field in week 1 will be better than any OL Seattle has had in the last 2 years, frankly, and Seattle could run on anyone. And I say that about the Rams even though I don’t know yet who all 5 on the starting OL will be.

April 30, 2015 at 10:07 pm #23482JackPMillerParticipantWho is blocking for Gurley? Is Tre Mason on the trade block? Once Scherff was gone, I thought trade down made sense, and then draft an Olineman.

The Rams have had good lines (when healthy) that didn’t have anyone on them even remotely like Scherf.
April 30, 2015 at 10:21 pm #23487HramParticipantI think Mason started the first 4-8 games of the season. Gurley will probably start the 2nd half, but having Mason come in for 10-12 carries a game keeps the play action pass game going.
It’s a deep draft for Olinemen, just not many that projected as strong first rounders.

#STLPick Todd Gurley. Had him as #2 player on board behind Mariota. Feel he’s best RB to come into NFL since AP. Will NOT rush him.
April 30, 2015 at 10:27 pm #23489znModeratorApril 30, 2015 at 10:44 pm #23492sdramParticipantI think that Gurley has “pro bowl” potential. I don’t really feel that way about Mason and I like Mason a lot. Gurley is talented. How he fits in to the Rams? Can an NFL team ever have enough talented guys?
The OL – they have five picks left. I’m confident they’ll draft OL guys and a potential starter at G/RT. And, now is Barksdale more in play now? It wouldn’t surprise me if he re-signs early next week.
All the late speculation about Erick Flowers and then he goes a pick before the Rams at 9. I wonder if Gurley is still their pick if the Gnats pick somebody besides Flowers at 9?

The Gurley hype train is picking up steam. Word is he’s been getting a clean bill of health so if that one red flag is off the table, that is really the only thing holding him back from being a top 10 pick.
Charles Robinson @CharlesRobinson
The draft range for Todd Gurley? Supposedly 6 to 10 now. That’s the word on the street. https://t.co/jE7B5D7CkWI could easily see the Rams taking him at 10, he’s a beast.
It would give Foles an elite running game to lean on and it would be the type of pick that fits Fisher’s M.O.
April 30, 2015 at 11:30 pm #23501PA RamParticipantNot sure what I think about it. Didn’t see it coming, that’s for sure.
Get Barksdale done now, I guess. And draft someone in the 2nd. Might be okay.

i do still expect them to select at least two offensive linemen.
gurley reminds me of steven jackson. with more speed. he’s got the power and he’s got the receiving ability of a steven jackson. great pick.

April 30, 2015 9:21 pm ET2015 NFL Draft: Rams gets C+ for picking RB Todd Gurley at No. 10
By Will Brinson | NFL Writer
April 30, 2015 9:21 pm ETGeorgia running back Todd Gurley was drafted by the Rams with the 10th pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.
Gurley is an explosive, game-breaking playmaker, but CBSSports.com’s Pete Prisco doesn’t like the pick, giving it a C+ as a luxury pick of sorts.
“I don’t think the Rams are in a spot to be able to take a back this high,” Prisco said. “But then again it’s Jeff Fisher. He loves to run it.”

@PriscoCBSGurley is good, but are the Rams at the point they can afford that luxury?

Gurley is the first running back taken in the first round of the NFL Draft since 2012 and the highest taken since Trent Richardson went third overall to the Browns that year.
Don’t wanna say I called it, but I actually called it, predicting Jeff Fisher would double down and take Gurley with the 10th pick this year in my mock. It’s my one saving grace, really.
I’d wholeheartedly disagree. The Rams have a setup with no real No. 1 wideout, Nick Foles at quarterback and need to be dominant in the run game. They have Zac Stacy and Tre Mason, but the reality is that Gurley, who is coming off an ACL injury he suffered in November while playing for the Bulldogs, is a much more dominant overall running back.
That’s doesn’t mean Stacy is happy about it.
