I am looking for people’s different example of what the Rams did right this year.
I think Rams management deciding that they should have all their injuries earlier in the season, rather than later in the season, was a great plan and worked out well.
Actually, and being serious, I like what they did with special teams. So my choice is something I think might get overlooked. Last year as we know the Rams special teams unit ranked 32nd. The reason for that, according to Rodrigue, is that with so many new young players in 2023, they didn’t have time within league allotted schedules to practice on special teams. They had to get all these youngsters up to speed on offense and defense.
But it turns out they were building something good all along. (And still are, they aren’t all the way there yet.) So for example one reason they drafted Whittington was cause he was a special teams ace at Texas, and that was on every unit–so he blocked, covered, and returned. Then we get something like the Jets game where Whittington both downed a punt inside the one (it’s a great play if you didn’t see it) and recovered a fumble. He’s not bad as a returner either.
Rams are doing a lot of things right on STs. (Leaving Karley’s growing pains out of it.)
For example…
they’re ranked 7th putting punts inside the 20
they blocked both a punt and an extra point this season, and scored on the blocked punt
They are not high up in the traditional metrics, like field goal percentage or net yards punting. They’re okay but not ranked high on those stats. But they do make plays, and are building a great unit.
