I watched the “Two Escobars,” a documentary about Andres Escobar, the great Columbian soccer player, and Pablo Escobar (no relation) the Drug Kingpin.
What struck me most about the documentary (its very good, full of firsthand accounts) was how popular Pablo Escobar was with many of the poor people of Columbia. Like Al Capone, and many many other crime-bosses of the past, he understood that if he helped the poor, they would help him. He built good housing developments for the poor, and built soccer fields all over the place, and generally looked out for them. And so they thought of him as a Robin Hood type outlaw.
Course he was more than that — he was also a cold-blooded murderer, etc.
