I spent some time today going back and reading OTA and camp reports on Hill. If you read them collectively you come away feeling pretty good.. The guy is a clear upgrade over Clemens and more than capable. Of course no one would say it’s ideal that he’s going to be need to be the 16-game starter vs. a 1-2 game fill-in. But assuming the rest of the team- defense, running game, receivers, special teams, and coaches- perform to their capabilities the Rams are still a tough and competitive team.

“Shaun Hill showed me more in one practice than I saw from Clemens in two years. And I was not a Clemens “hater”. I just saw him for what he was. Someone who would make plays, but was just not capable of making the throws when he needed to make them.”

“Looks exactly like what a professional backup QB should look like. Seems comfortable and doesn’t get rattled. An upgrade over last year’s backup. Arm Strength is ok, good enough to make the throws he has to make, but his experience allows him to put the ball where it needs to be, WHEN it needs to be there.”

“Shaun Hill makes plays. Might not look pretty doing it all the time, and his delivery isn’t text book. But the ball gets where it’s supposed to be, and gets there on time.”

Compared with Kellen Clemens, last year’s backup, Hill has better arm strength and better accuracy. Whether he has Clemens’ leadership ability and on-field energy remains to be seen.

“Hill replaces Kellen Clemens as the backup, and if he has to play, the passing offense will not be as diminished as it was when Clemens had to play.”
