This is a characteristic Gurley thing. This pic is from his second TD run. By all rights these defenders should have him, but they then seem at the last second to not have the right angle, though it’s by a fraction. This is a thing of his I noticed in college. He sets defenders up to glance off him. It;s not just great (so-called) “contact balance,” it’s an instinctive slight shift in his center of balance and the angle of his body lean, so that when a defender hits him, the defender seems to glance off. I noticed it watching college highlights. The first time you see it you go, okay. Then you see it again. And again. And again. After a while, you realize, he’s doing something to make that happen. It;s a signature thing of his.

The pic doesn’t really capture it though so I include the vid, too. This play is at 1:20 in.

I promise this thing is a staple of his. As I said you can see it if you watch college highlights.

Now three straight with 125+ yards. If he does it again Sunday vs. San Francisco he’ll be one of 13 players ever with 4+ consecutive 125+ yard rushing games. The list:

6- Chris Johnson, Eric Dickerson, Early Campbell
5- Larry Johnson, Clinton Portis, Barry Sanders, OJ Simpson
4- Frank Gore, Clinton Portis, Terrell Davis, Marcus Allen, Otis Armstrong

By the way, Steven Jackson had 3 straight 125+ yard rushing games three times- 2006, 2009 and 2011…

    Gurley is special.

He isn’t just off to a rookie hot start that will taper off when teams get film on him. He is the real deal.

On his long run…Austin cleans out two defenders in a block that gives him the corner. A thing of beauty.

Echoing the first post. Here’s college highlights. Look for the plays at 0.55, 2.29, & 2.45 in, they show the same thing.
