Sources: The #Rams and QB Matthew Stafford are closing in on a contract extension. The Super Bowl champion cashing in. With a roster bonus due tomorrow the two sides are working on a deal ahead of that and it’s expected to get done
More specifics on Matthew Stafford’s extension: It’s effectively a 3-year extension worth $129M — $43M a year. There are added years for cap purposes. But $43M over the next 3 of the deal. And Stafford took less than he could’ve to help build on a Super Bowl-caliber team.

After a Super Bowl win, this is going to sound very cold. But this extension scares me. Far too much guaranteed, and the cap hits in 2024 thru 2026 are at Rodgers’ levels. He can’t be traded, and if he gets hurt, the Rams are in trouble. His age is also an issue . . . even though Brady reset that debate.

Personally, I think TB is an anomaly, and it’s a mistake for FO’s to think in those terms. Humans decline physically as they age, especially NFL players. They just do. And Stafford has been hurt far more often than Brady.

I’m all for rewarding him and the rest of the team. Loved their championship year. They played above and beyond. But there’s a difference between reward and albatross.

Here are the full details of Matthew Stafford’s contract, including yearly cap hits

    i disagree, billy.

it’s not just brady.  dozens of quarterbacks are playing well into their late 30s.  philip rivers had one of his highest passer ratings at age 37 playing all 16 games.  didn’t miss a single game from age 30-39.  brees played until he was 41 and was productive.  rodgers was in his age 38 season last year.  has led the league in passer rating the past 2 years.

stafford will be 38 that last year of the contract.  and he could probably play 2-3 years past that if he wanted to barring any serious injury.

quarterback are just so protected right now.  unlike 20 years ago.  tom brady is 45 and going into his 23rd year.  now i don’t think stafford will play quite that long.  but if he did.  he’d still be playing in 2033.  and if it was all with the rams, he’d have played more years in la than he did in detroit…  again.  i doubt that would happen.

but if he can play 8 years in la, i’d be happy.  and it’d be doable.  and he could very well be highly productive for all those years.  at 8 years, he’d be playing in his age 40 season – 2028.  and he will have played more years in an era where qbs are protected by the league.  and if sean mcvay is his head coach all those years, he’ll have advantages that most qbs will not have.

shoot.  big whit played until he was 40, and i imagine stafford’s body didn’t take half the punishment whit’s body did.

lastly, the cap hits in 2024-26 will be big.  it’ll be rodgers big.  but 2 things.  the cap number will go up every year.  and stafford can always renegotiate i would think.  i’m no cap expert.  but i’m sure they have it figured it out already.

and also.  that means that 2022 and 2023 will be small cap numbers.  when the rams’ window will be biggest…  ie when aaron donald is still playing.

i think there might be something to what whit says here.  the pressure is off matt now.  he led the team to a super bowl.  he answered a lot of questions.  not all of them.  but some of the most important ones.  and now.  he can – not relax – but he can just let it all hang out.  a lot of things have to happen still.  but i’m curious to see if he has a different mindset than last year.  and if he does, i’m curious to see where that takes him as he looks to finish off the second half of his career.
