A starting Center just doesn’t walk in and learn the system (terminology:line calls;play book, etc) without greatly limiting the offense.
The most important job of a center is to have the ability to get everyone on the same page. He is universally considered “half a blocker” compared to everyone else on the unit.
You really want to understand how they made the decision….. Don’t focus on the individual. Focus on the unit and how it performs as an entity. Go back and look at the results when Barnes played compared to the other two. It’s not even close. And wasn’t throughout training camp.

I finally caught up with all my film study on the OL, and although Jones is a slight surprise, I’d have picked Rhaney over him. Williams was easy, over Battle, who is just too raw. I’d like to develop him. Reynolds played good at G, and ORT. Barnes is Barnes, not great, but maybe good enough. Donnal had moments at both ORT and G. J. Brown, and Havenstein were early locks.
I’m going to throw a dark horse name out there, and nobody will remember, but D. Williams has impressed me more than some of the other guys. Pretty good athlete, thinks on his feet. Decent power. I’d really like to see more of that dude. He was clearly our 2nd best OLT, IMO. He has the body and quickness to be able to play G too. I could see him playing Guard too. Be a better developmental guy than a lot of them here. Watch him during the Davis series during the Indy game, and every time he’s in there, he flashes. Haven’t seen the Chiefs game, yet. I think I can watch it at midnight Pacific.
Was Rhaney always getting pushed backwards? It happened only a couple times, and once when he was pulling, not really his fault. He was a better G, than C, IMO. And he improved greatly, every game he played. What I liked about Rhaney, was his absolute tenacity. Dude never stops helping, looking to hit someone else.
September 5, 2015 at 9:48 pm #29942InvaderRamModeratorso guesses on the starting center?
i’m hoping it’s rhaney only because he’s the less known quantity. and in my screwed up logic, he represents more potential.
on the other hand, that’s not a lot of game experience with rhaney there. so probably barnes.
September 5, 2015 at 9:56 pm #29943znModeratorI figure it’s Barnes. This is his 5th year. IMO the experience will count for more, and Rhaney can wait and develop. (Btw Barnes was a Spags find so that now makes 8 players from those years who are either starters, on contract extensions, key role players, and/or the object of a major trade: JL, RQ, CL, Sims, Barnes, Saffold, Kendricks, Reynolds, and Bradford)
September 5, 2015 at 10:05 pm #29946CalParticipantI’d guess Barnes too. He looks bigger than Rhaney which should help against all of the 3-4 nose tackles the Rams play this year.
The Rams have to be excited about Rhaney’s athletecism though. He’s looked so good on some plays that I can almost forget about his penalties in the last 2 games.

Darrell Williams
Height: 6-5
Weight: 296
40: 5.32
School: South Florida
Position: T
Bio: Two-year starter at left tackle.Positive: Tall, athletic tackle prospect with a good amount of upside potential. Quick off the snap, patient in pass protection and effective on the second level. Sets with a wide base, works to bend his knees and effectively fights with his hands. Adjusts to oncoming linebackers and does a nice job picking up the blitz.
Negative: Inconsistent in his all-around game. Must improve his run blocking. Struggles to finish blocks and falls off defenders.
Analysis: After breaking into the starting lineup as a junior, Williams has shown consistent progress and is a developmental prospect with practice squad potential.

Did Battle do anything while with the Rams? Yes Battle let himself get beat out of his reserve OLT spot by a more prepared, more mature & more NFL ready 6-5 307 pound UDFA from tropical south Fl. Who had 29 starts @ OLT in college & awards. Who came from another country, becoming an American & learning to live in the greatest country in the world where dreams yet can come true with hard work. I am glad Darrell Williams is a Ram.
===============
Darrell Williams working as the Rams’ second-team left tackle on Friday. Williams, a 6-foot-5, 300-pounder, delivered a pretty impressive performance and actually seemed more comfortable than guys like Havenstein and Battle. It should be interesting to see if Williams can make himself a practice squad candidate, or perhaps even make a good enough impression to push a player like Reynolds or fourth-rounder Andrew Donnal out of the mix when the Rams cut to 53.
