    Maybe not the best Marvel movie (although it’s up there) but perhaps the best denouement I’ve ever seen.

    But. If you defeat 2014 Thanos in 2023, doesn’t that mean that none of the Thanos stuff from 2014 on ever happened?

    I watched it. I won’t watch it again. In fact, I didn’t watch much of it this time. I fast forwarded it most of the way through.

    They were collateral damage. I downloaded the movie off a pirate site.

    I’ve been thinking about this too. I didn’t like this movie’s ideas on time travel. As Antman noted, they defied the laws of time travel as established by every episode of Star Trek. I could be missing something, (I had to urinate 45 minutes into the movie but refused to go so I may have missed some details as I concentrated on not wetting myself) but here’s how I gathered it worked.

    The overarching premise as stated by Hulk/Banner is:

    The future can’t effect the past.

    If you travel back in time the past becomes your future. Since the future can’t effect the past, you need not worry about altering the timeline.

    Now how does that apply to Thanos traveling from 2014 to 2023?

    In this case when Thanos travels to 2023 from 2014, he is still traveling into the future. Since the future cannot alter the past, the timeline prior to 2023 is unchanged.

    I know it’s weird and I’m not endorsing it, but that’s why I think Thanos traveling to 2023 didn’t alter the timeline after 2014.

    The whole problem with the “if you travel back in time the future is now your past” argument is that it defines time travel entirely as the experience of the individual traveller.

    Which makes no sense.

    Time is not simply the subjective experience of an individual. Social systems have time too. As does the material universe. Your own individual experience does not alter that.

    So as of right now, 2014 Thanos went to 2023, and won’t be returning. That means that he no longer exists from 2014 on. There’s no Thanos in 2015, 2016, etc. because he cannot be there. That means that whatever Thanos originally did in those years now no longer happened, because he is now no longer there to do them. That is, all the historical events that took place in the material universe and in the lives of trillions in galactic history no longer include the specific events he caused. It only makes sense to say that the historical narrative of that world without Thanos would be different than the one that included him.

    The trash cans are actually cryogenic chambers where Bruce Banner stored his parents years before.

    Tony Stark designed them.
